Newly diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my neck

Hi I have now been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my neck. I'm 74 and female. I had an op on my right shoulder 18 months ago to relieve the severe pain i was in. This has worked well. But my neck is a different ball game. The headaches are constant together with tinnitus. I am normally a very active person , but the lack of sleep is exhausting. I have tried neck pillows but nothing seems to help.Any ideas will be gratefully received.

Many thanks x

have a look at the website of Arthritis Action and Versus Artheitis, if you are not familiar with them already.

You can self refer to the NHS physios, six month wait round here, or see privately a physio or osteopath or chiropractor. If they can’t help you (and I bet they can!) they would tell you.

Thanks. Yes I do go to a Mctimony Chiropractor. She's brilliant but it doesn't help with sleeping. I will look at the sites you've suggested x

I also have osteoarthritis in my neck and I’ve been helped tremendously by “The Original Groove® Pillow For Neck Pain“. I’ve tried many others before this pillow but find this helps the most with the pain and headaches. The neck exercises from the NHS physio helps also. Hope you can get some relief.

I have osteoarthritis pretty much in every joint including my neck. I started doing posture exercises as I also had forward head posture. After about a month, my neck pain started to improve a good deal. I have to keep doing them, but at least I am not in much pain anymore when trying to sleep! I believe that most of the pain was from my forward head posture which put more stress on my neck joints. Good luck to you finding a solution, Nanna.

I feel for ya, despite nearly 20 operations in the last 10-12 years (first to try to avoid bilateral total hips and then bilateral TKA then having those surgeries at age 46-49 I finally had to close my small business during the lackdown as i can’t hold my head erect for 8 hours any longer. Mine is normal osteoarthritis just early onset and quite severe. I decided to give up work to hopefully prolong kidney function as post TKA or THR you labs will put the fear of “goodness” into you. After watching eGFR go back to 7-8 and creatinine jump to 4/5 post joint replacement I’ve decided no more surgeries unless life dependent. My best to you!
