Steroid injection for knee pain

Hi I have recently been told that I need a knee replacement, but because I have had 3 stents in a blocked artery, I will have to wait 6 months for the OP! I am in quite a bit of pain and this is very dibilating, I cannot walk very far at all. I was wondering if I could have a steroid injection for the pain, I'm taking blood thinners and a statin now since my stent procedure?

I was having serious issues with my left knee last summer, and my rheumatologist referred me for potential surgery for my injuries. When I asked about a steroid injection, he said he wouldn’t do, as it would delay any potential surgery by 6 months, due to the increased risk of infections.

The Consultant told me I'd have to wait 6 months for the knee replacement because of the stent procedure, that's why I was asking about a steroid jab, to allow me some sort of relief during that time.

Sure try a steroid shot worked perfect for me and that was 7 years ago 78 now. I’m on blood thinners and statins, no issues. Have stents also.

How long did it last?

It’s worked till now about 7 years. The steroid shot is a real nothing, takes a few seconds and that’s it. I will likely need a knee someday but till then doing nothing . I can walk ski and ride a bike , I’m happy with that. And no pain yet.

I've heard they only lasted 6 weeks, in UK anyway.

Hi, it's going back a few years, I. e. The 1990's but during that time, whilst having bad knee problems, I had a number of injections into both knees, they certainly gave some relief which lasted around three to six months. Think the recommendation then was that you shouldn't have more than three due to the danger of long term damage. Given they were close to bone on bone I couldn't really care a monkeys about long term damage!! TKN's solved the problem and still going strong after twenty four years. Blood thinners and a Statin shouldn't prove a problem. Good luck and hope things improve.

The positive effect of my steroid injection lasted about two weeks. Another friend's lasted six months and another friend's lasted six years. The effects do vary from person to person so you may be lucky.

Physiotherapy exercises have helped me with the pain as well as paracetamol daily.

Hi Bowser1966, I have had injections in both my knees and I take statins and blood thinners. You need to speak to your GP as not all GP's can give these injections. Good luck and take care, Maximonkey

I have an inflammatory arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis, which affects my spine, but also most joints. Both my knees, the kneecaps are partially dislocated due to calcification of the tendons. I’ve had numerous steroid injections Ito my knees. My rheumatologist does them immediately at his clinic with no waiting for another appointment. My GP class them as minor surgery, and I had to wait7 weeks for an injection with them. As someone else mentioned, not all gps do them. The results lasted between 6-12 months

My rheumatologist will give me knee injections every three months. That’s about as long as they last. He does them in his office and there is some discomfort but it is brief and tolerable. I just had a knee replacement so want to delay knee replacements as long as I can. Good luck!
