Hello, thank you for allowing me to join your group. I’ve only recently been told that I have severe osteoarthritis in my knees, and actually it’s quite bad, but unfortunately nearly all drs won’t consider me for knee replacements at this moment because I’m too young, I’m 53. I have to be 60, which I can’t get my head round, waiting until then, but it is what it is. My main question is, do you only get osteoarthritis in your knees, or can it be other places too, like your wrists or elbow? Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe.

Hello jinnty

Sorry to hear you story, it doesn’t seem right does it when your in so much pain.

I’m 41 and in agony with osteoarthritis.

You can unfortunately get it almost anywhere.... I have it in a number of places including.... thumbs, wrist, elbow, ankles, toes, feet, groin, lower spine, neck, knee and shoulder. I’m being told there is nothing they can do and I have now been discharged from my rheumatologist back to the care of my gp but I will add I have had a terrible experience with my rheumatologist and am in the process of the complaints procedure.

Hello, Dazakella2010, I’m so sorry to hear about your experience, yes I’ve found the similar thing with the surgeons, on asking about maybe getting “new” knees. I was given every excuse under the sun, and jumping through lots of hoops, until my husband got angry and told him to tell us the truth, that he wasn’t going to do anything until I was 60, and that was it. I asked for a second opinion, but the surgeon there was extremely angry that I had done this, and how dare I ignore another dr, and no dr would say that they wouldn’t do it, I was bang out of order asking for a second opinion. So, I got nowhere. I sincerely hope that you can get some resolution, and that they listen to you. Take care and stay safe.

You can get it in any joint - knees are most susceptible because they take a lot of pounding - even in normal life without adding in running or playing sports when under extra pressure. I had knee, hip and shoulder replaced during a 2 year period, after many years of managing - with caring degrees of success.

2nd shoulder is painful - but coping with exercise and topical gel at the moment

I thought I'd add my 2 cents. I had severe arthritis my left knee and the right is not too far behind. Also have it in pretty much all my joints at 68 years old. Had my left knee replaced (TKN) 3 months ago. I was told it's best to wait as long as you can stand it before replacement because a TKN will last 20-25 years and the docs don't want to redo it if possible. At least THAT is what I'm told. As far as my new knee, still a bit sore ( now I'm told it could be a year before it feels "natural." ) Also, I am reading that the docs prefer you to shy away from "abusive" activities/sports that may hasten the wearing out of the "plastic" cushion in your new knee. It sure isn't as good as the "original equipment" :) , but it's the next best thing.
