It should be fine - unless you've got a liver as jumpy as mine and even mine is getting much more user friendly re a few units per week. If your liver enzymes rise at least you'll know why but just have a glass to be safe. And enjoy it! Tilda x
Hi, my consultant always says to just live as normally as possible and that can include a moderate amount of alcohol! Just don't drink more than the recommended daily amounts and preferably not on the day you're taking or injecting your MTX dose. And red wine is supposed to be really good for you anyway, so I started drinking a glass every now and then for health reasons Then again, my bloods have always come back normal regarding the liver stuff so maybe I've trained my liver well, haha.
But anyway it's funny, I've wondered the same thing today as I really fancied a glass of wine with dinner but as I've had to inject myself my 15mg MTX today I thought it wiser to let it be. Maybe tomorrow!

Hi, I'm on 25mg of Mtx & usually have three 175 ml glasses of wine per week which is the limited recommended to me. I have to admit I sometimes do go over the limit, though not by much. But I still have fortnightly blood tests and keep an eye on the results that relate to the liver. They've never been excessively raised but if they start to rise I take the hint!
I do accept that people with RA are better off without too much alcohol - shame really! In my next life, if I've got to get a disease I'll try to go for one that doctors recommend a good old booze up for!
Unless you've been told to avoid alcohol altogether - Cheers! Luce xx
How come you have 2 weekly blood tests Luce? I've moved up a dose injectable mtx and worry in between times about liver (sometimes raised) and wbcs but my GP told me monthly is fine. I never quite know how much my GPs know about MTX monitoring if you know what I mean?!!!
I think it's just down to inertia as I was originally told that the tests would be done monthly after a while - seems nobody's thought to make the change.
I am wishing mine would be two weekly so I can find out what alchohol levels work for my liver you see but the nurse said I'm fine on monthly even though I've only recently been moved up to 17.5. I seem to have got away with almost a whole bottle to myself in Saturday night plus a few g&ts the previous night - but that's after a week off my DMARDs so not the same once I'm back on of course. Nurse said she would phone me if my bloods abnormal today and I've heard nothing which is why I think my liver must be adjusting well! X
As long as ur liver results are fine in bloods then yes it's fine.i am on 17.5 mg too and drink wine, upto 3-4,glasses a week but never in one hit ,also drink Malibu if i fancy a change in wine and have 4 glasses a week max.ive never had a bad liver result.my dr said upto 10 units a week but never in one go.so enjoy ur glass of wine :))) ive just had a couple of malibus as my best friends birthday.cheers ! Love Michelle xxx
Blimey Shell 10 units a week...your doc is more generous than mine. She recommends 1 unit! I do find now that a whole glass of wine makes me feel a bit sick, so just have tiny glasses every now and then, and a mini-glass of whiskey on special occasions.
Im absolutely not good I'm drinking more than I should 30 units a week but have very stressful job, But better than I was - I average 20 worst 40 with liver tests can only think I,m lucky to have a strong liver. I keep monitoring and really try hard to give myself a good couple of days. Cos I know I cant count on that for ever but end of day its a life choice.
Both my GPs have said they wouldn't want to inject themselves with a drug unless it made a minimal impact on their lifestyles and they don't see why it should for me. When my liver has soared a bit they've blamed the drug not the booze and it's only been me who has pointed out the connection - they've been shocked?! I don't think the medical profession are singing from one song on this at all and I keep forgetting to ask my rheumy but as my liver tells tales a lot then I think I'm best sticking to minimal units per week - about 3 max (but I have broken it and lived to tell the tale on a few occasions!). TTx
Thank you so much for all your replies. I did have a lovely glass of chianti.
I have to have 2 weekly bloods done now I am on injections. I have got the GP surgery to phone me with blood results.Delighted that my CRP has dropped to 60...best it has been. Hopefully things are on the improve. Take care everyone xxxxx
Hi rockpool60
I have had RA for 5 years and have always had a couple of glasses of wine but only at the weekends unless I am on holiday.
I always think we have lost so much with the RA then anything we can still do from our old lives that does not make us ill or the RA worse is well worth doing.
A glass of wine or whatever your tipple is makes you more relaxed and helps you sleep better, well that what it does for me.
