I was diagnosed with RA in march and have been on increasing dose of methotrexate. Yesterday my rheumatologist started me on hydroxychloroquine as well. Is anyone else on this combination and have you had any problems with it as I know hydroxychloroquine can cause eye sight problems. Thanks
Does anyone take methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine ... - NRAS
Does anyone take methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine and has anyone had problems with hydroxychloroquine?
Hi Catjones
I have been taking this combination, started on both of them in January this year. Recently my eyes have felt sore and, after posting a question on this site, I am seeing my GP on Monday. As I already need specs I have also booked an appointment with my optician for later in the week. Hope it isn't a side effect
Take care
Christine

Yep I have been on these two for 3 years, plus Humira for 2 yrs, had eyes checked plaquinil damage to eyes is rare. I take 200 mg plaquinil daily,& 20 mg MTX & bloods / liver coping fine, everyone is different but I seem to tolerate well.
Good Luck!
Just to add my unique reaction....... Monumenal farting !!!!! No joke I had to come off purely because I thought I was going to take off in work. Not good for credibility let me tell you xxxx Fi
that is so funny.... but dreadfully embarassing.... poor you... x
Heavens Sparkle I had the windy pops too! LOL
Its calmed down a lot now (2months on combination), still not 'normal' but much better than a few weeks ago!
This really made me laugh - I have been on Methotrexate since March and am just about to add Hydro in too. Hope I don't suffer as you have! Thankyou for making me laugh out loud! xx
Hi CatJ - I was also on that combination for 6 months but came off the Hydrox as it wasn't working for me and it also caused trouble with my eyes. However, that eventually settled down once not taking it any more. Had to see the eye surgeon at the hospital. No treatment required. Had spots on the corneas which the optician first noticed.
I am on 15 mg of MTX + Enbrel. I think at the time I was on a very high dose of MTX - 24 mg but don't know whether that had anything to do with it.
Gosh Sparkle, what a reaction - I bet you were not too popular at work! I must admit I didn't get that reaction - thank goodness. lol. LavendarLady x
I have been taking this combination since first diagnosed 4 years ago with no adverse affects until now when I notice my eyesight is sometimes blurry. Maybe due to tierdness will have to see optician
blurry see optician asap!!! do not delay.. please find the other blog. question on hydroxychloroquine using search tags.. and see anwers!!
I have been on MTX & sulfasalazine & recently started on Hydro, and so far I have a fantastic reduyction in swelling, not sure if its coincidence but I hope this will continue. Sadly I am starting with Dry eyes
Me - and I take Sulfasalazine as well.
My blood test results suggest I am improving - my physical experience doesn't quite agree with that!
Hi I to am on this combination.I had a indeph eye examination and will have yearly eye tests whilst on these meds. Its well worth having the eye tests for peace of mind.I do get swelling in the corners of my eyes but this began before the meds. However i am still in pain and stiff with swelling so will see at next clinic .x
Too many side effects of both methotrexate and Hydrochloroquine prompted my beautiful daughter to encourage me to go on a strict diet with no meds. I did check with my gp and rheumy re this. I am now thank God in remission 🌸
Wow! That's what I'm doing too. My numbers for inflamation were high off the chart when I was first diagnosed. Now my numbers are in normal range. I'm also doing it with diet. Praise God. Richgirl🌻
This is wonderful. Do you mind telling me the strict diet you are on. I was diagnosed almost 2 years ago and am trying to avoid some of the meds. Thank you.
I started on the plaquenil first about 20 yrs, no problems whatsoever, just had mtx added.
I’m on both those and have not had any problems. Had a full eye check to get a base and now will have a full check every 12 months. Hope you do well 😄
I used to be on both but had to stop methotrexate due to liver problems. I’m still on hydroxychloroquinine. No problems so far. Optician gave me something to stick on fridge so I could test my eyes regularly. Considering I have had problems with a lot of the other meds ie allergies hydroxychloroquinine is the lesser of the evils lol.
