I am of Sulphasazine (Cant Spell it). My Dr just called and said I have to have another blood test as my white blood cells are low.

What are the implications of having a low white blood cell count? If the new results come back the same will the Dr change my medication? Will the low count stop me having another steroid injection on Wednesday?

my white cell count was low for a while on plaquinil & methtrexate, but its ok now, it just righted itself.

White cell counts can be up and down as fast as the weather changes so I wouldn't be worrying just yet! Sometimes there can be a blip in the system too so well worth getting the test repeated.

Medication is unlikely to be changed hastily but the sulph may be reduced if they feel it necessary. As Gina says WBC have a habit of putting themselves right sometimes!

Hope it's sorted soon

Hi Marnie - I suffer from low white cell counts. Was taken off Meth because of this as they were really low, and then put on leflunomide. After a couple of months white cells were really low on that and it was touch and go as to whether or not to stay on it. However at the end of May I had a steroid injection and then they increased to the highest levels they have ever been at! Although when I saw the rheumy he said that actually the steroid injection would have caused that! So to answer your question about your injection I doubt they would not do it, and it may even help the white cells! My injection has now worn off and white cells have been decreasing again! Depending on how low yours are they may reduce medication, or stop it for a while and then try again. If they continue to be low they may change your medication I would think...

I've had the same problems off and on, but it does straighten out. Unfortunately R/A is something that can be really discouraging at times, but just keep going to the consultant and have your bloods done until the time comes he feels you are stable. Good luck, I know it's difficult at times, Pam
