HI Vickysolo sorry to hear that I changed my diet completely one of the first things I cut out was tomatoes, aubergines etc apparently they make flare ups worse. Also the obvious things like coffee, alchohol and any citrus fruit and drinks should be cut down. I have also cut down on dairy as all the above mentioned food build up toxins. Turn to brown pasta, rice brd etc. I guess the key is a balanced diet. Another thing i do is drink apple cider vinger 1 tbsp in a tumbler of water with 1 tsp of honey three times a day. in terms of diet cinnamon and turmeric are natural anti inflammatory agents I guess adding them into your diet is helpful but before doing anything check with your doc that they dont interfere with your meds. Hope that helps and good luck your not alone! Poppy

Hi Vickysolo, I'm newly diagnosed aswell, have to keep coming off MTX as my blood counts are up and down all the time :-( I saw my consultant last week and he told me to cut down on red meat !!! and take omega 3 supplements.

Hope that helps, I'll try anything

Hi everyone,

I'm still awaiting my first rheumy appointment, but my cousin swears by cutting out food when she has a flare up. I have cut out all drinks with the exception of water, milk, chocolate, sweets, cakes (you know all the nice things!). I don't eat red meat anyway, but I have upped my intake of fish, fruit and vegetables. I had read in numerous articles that the nightshade family (potatoes, aubergines, tomatoes etc) can cause inflammation but as previous people have stated, everyone is different.

I have also started taking omega 3 supplements - my granny used to swear by cod liver oil! as well as a multi vitamin just to ensure I am getting all my vitamins and antioxidants.

I have also started having home-made smoothies too, just with blueberries, strawberries (both antioxidants) and orange juice (not concentrate) - but this is mainly because I can't stand the taste eating them individually but in a smoothie it doesn't taste bad...I usually have this either for breakfast or mid morning snack.

I've only done this for 1 week but I've already lost 3lbs (i'll make sure I don't lose too much though) and funnily enough I don't actually feel very hungry, not like when you do a normal 'diet'. I would definately give up the coffee though, its not just bad for RA but a whole host of other ailments. I was addicted to tea, so I switched to de-caf and then I've managed to cut it out altogether. Good luck with everything, best wishes xx
