Mentioned these to a nurse doing my bloods today while chatting about the weather. She'd never heard of them and I imagine many other people haven't so thought I'd stick a post on.
They're amazing for walking on compacted snow and ice. Can get a bit clogged up in thick snow. A bit awkward to wrap securely round your shoes/boots if you have poor grip, as they fit snugly, but I've used them for years, especially for winter dog walking. I wouldn't be without them now as I can walk along icy paths so much more confidently with them.
Not to be worn indoors - especially not on shiny surfaces in shops for eg, as you're likely to skid. Also not for driving in although I have sometimes in the past to save time.
I tend to walk gingerly in Skechers with dull, flexible soles (bit like slippers) between home and van and in between dog pick ups and then change into my boots with the Yakrax on once I'm at a park or wherever.
Size Small covers Euro shoe size 38 to 42.5 and you can get them at sports shops, Amazon, Ebay etc.

Oh thank you for that. Do they have little spikes in the wires? We have some but they are just the wire and are only suitable for using in snow.
I saw some in a magazine recently that appear to have been designed to be used on ice and I think they are different to the ones we have. If yours have some sort of spikes that will dig into an icy surface then I’ll invest in them!
They just have wires. However even on black ice I find that they do bite into the ice. They allow me to walk in conditions that would be impossible without them. So long as you are aware of what you are walking on and slow down on sheet ice they are very good. I like the fact that they provide grip at heels as I land heavily on my heels when I walk. Anything that only grips on the ball of the foot is useless to me.
I have some called Kahtoola spikes. Can’t rate them highly enough for ice - they’re like mini crampons and make icy surfaces a breeze. I bought them during a bad winter and was able to walk around safely in town during a bad freeze.
I got me wellies and stable boots, no horse but great boots. This is a good idea and might save someone a nasty fall. A principle like snow chains on the car.
I have a pair of those. I put them on my Sketchers furry lined boots. There are some dicey pavements round here and the footbridge by work is lethal in this weather. They are a help. Got mine from an outdoor shop called Blacks who have sadly gone now.
I have a pair, I bought years ago, brilliant at allowing you to safely walk. I seldom use them though, as I live in the South East corner, where we rarely see snow. Probably jinxed it now 😂😂
I'm in West Yorks and always dread the winter. We've been lucky a couple of years and had very little snow but not this year. Used to be horrendous back in the 60s and 70s.
Don't remember much when I lived in London. Friends in Cornwall did have a bit a couple of years or so ago though I remember. A novelty for them!
I’ve used these for years as they definitely make you feel safe on ice and snow but having lost a couple because they slipped off, I bought the ones with the strap over the top of the foot. They are slightly more expensive but saves the annoyance and inconvenience if, in snow, the thing slips off your boot and a) you can’t find it and b) one without the other is useless! Happened to me twice so just be warned - pay a bit more and be secure!
I have had one slip off when walking in thick snow. Found it again and put it back on but in those days I had much better grip and could do it with ease. I have bought the Pro ones you mention as well.
I've also had the rubber snap on one after a lot of use. Not sure if the rubber is tougher now or it's just that my wrists and hands are so much weaker. I had to put a boot between my knees and work hard to stretch it round this week.
Yes I used these in Norway last winter.great for ice and Snow. Norway shops, cafes etc are prepared with a couple of chairs by entrance doors so that you can sit to remove them or put them back on before leaving. It is crucial that you do not wear them indoors or where there is no ice or snow. Let alone damaging floor surfaces you are likely to slip and fall. Walking on a wooden or tiled floor or even smooth tarmac is like walking on ice with these on.
Thank you for this. I have the ones with just spikes, but one of them has broken. I was unsure how these worked and if they would be as good as the spikes.
I will take a look. These types of products are a must in the snow. I just find them difficult to get on my boots and have to put them on before I put my boots on.
Love your description of your wrists!! It made me laugh. 😆 (sorry if that offends). Thanks for checking the sizes. I think I would be a small as I'm size 7 UK size.
Thank you so much for this. I deal with low mobility issues. This is the first year, first time, I dreaded the bad weather for fear of falling. This will help a great deal. I appreciate this.
