Flare cause - early RA diagnosis.

Had a flare over this weekend. Not sure of trigger. On Friday I had a very hot curry that caused my lips and mouth to blister for about an hour. Also on Friday my Methotrexate was doubled from 4 to 8 tablets. No problems with two previous 4 tablets Methotrexate . Any experience on this kind of situation? Flare was right hip and groin, resulting in losing the ability to walk.

RA helpline down at present.

Next Friday I will again take 8 tablets and see if the flare repeats, but any experience would be welcomed.

Not sure there is such a thing as a trigger in food but could you have been sat in one position too long and got stiff? As same side it might be a possibility. I don't know about MTX but think that if it happens again without the curry it may be a possibility so its wait and see.

Yes, immediately prior to the flare I fell asleep on my sofa for an hour and a half. That was midday and the flare started at 3pm. Sofa due for repair, soft cushions and springs, and in hand. Perceptive, thanks, never crossed my mind.

Rheumatoid Portal came back and said " Methotrexate too low to be involved, and they have no knowledge of hot curry being a problem."

Thanks medway-lady , you are a star!

It happened to me years ago I sat with a turned over ankle whilst drinking wine and middle of the night I awoke in agony. Saw cruise ship doctor who arranged buckets of ice every hour till mid morning and a steroid injection and bingo I went to the Vatican. I learnt hard way. lol x

Sounds like you're in early days of MTX treatment, if so takes about 3 months for meds to kick in. Were you supplied with an advice line number? If so give them a call to explain situation, they may have summat interim to help you?

Not heard of a food trigger for a flare, in fact not sure what triggers them off other than the existence of the condition.

The higher the dose the worse the side effects are, for instance I couldn'd eat spicy food at all, I also felt everything was over salted so had to cut salt back a lot. of course there is the awful nasea some people get as you know.

My methotrexate dose is going to be raised, but my lovely R A team will prescribe injections so I dont suffer side effects, I am on 4 tablets at the moment but it is no longer enough.

Good Luck Trevorlloyd1351

Thanks for the info. Let's hope my next MTX of 8 tablets goes without problem.
