I've been notified by GP to attend practice for an RSV vaccination. Is this OK when you are on auto immune medication?Anyone had it, if so any problems?

Help!!

There are major studies to show that the burden of rsv (respiratory syncytial virus) in immune compromised people is significant and they would benefit from the vaccine. As far as I am aware only those over 75 are being offered it but it may be rolled out to those of us on immunosuppressive medication and if that would be the case I would certainly have the vaccine.

Gov.UK - Your Guide to the RSV vaccine for older adults gives more info.

Thank you, really appreciate your reassurance. I am 75 so that's why I'm being offered it.

I suggest checking with your rheumatology team to see if it would be best to pause any of your current treatments to maximise the efficiency of the vaccine. I was told to miss the methotrexate tablets after the shingles vaccine and Cimzia injection before to improve the immune response to the vaccine.

We get vaccinations, except live variants, but must pause immunosuppressive therapy. Currently, that means our typical weekly Enbrel injection is missed once with the vaccine replacing it on the exact day. We always get precise instructions, for each vaccine, from our rheumatologist.

Wow, they do look after you. Am assuming you're in England? Do your rheumatology dept still organise any medication you are on? Mine will start me off on a new one, thereafter my GP practice takes over. The practice organised all vaccinations re covid, etc and the new one. Thank you. It's interesting hearing how different areas organise 'things'. Have a good week.

We're in the USA. Our privilege comes at an extreme price.

That makes sense. My mother's 2nd marriage was to an American. They made their home in North Carolina, his birth place. I have had first hand experience of the medical situation with both of them. It is a costly privilege. I did not move to America as I was already married before my mum was married again. Thank you. Have a good life.

I had my vaccination last week. No problems except a badly bruised and sore arm.

I had my 6 monthly Prolia injection last Thursday for my osteoporosis and asked the rheumatology nurse should I stop my bio med and mtx injections for the RSV vac and she hadn’t heard of it ! My surgery said will be ok, however I have decided to delay by one week and hope ok. X
