Prednisolone and Alcohol

Hi I am on a 5 day 4040mg steroids, I finish Sunday morning, my daughters wedding is on Monday, typical ! I don't drink as also on Methotrexate , but was looking forward to toasting a poss one other drink, what do you think ? will it be out of my system?

we are all different just check with your pharmacy but I have had a small drink whilst on pred and was on BUT you need to check

I’m confused, so you will have finished pred by the time of your daughter’s wedding in Monday?. I’m on steroids for life, both at higher and lower doses, I also take 25mg of methotrexate weekly. My rheumatologist is happy gir ne to drink within the U.K. guidelines of 14 units a week. My liver function blood tests are always normal. I was on both gir my daughter’s wedding, and still enjoyed a champagne to toast, along with a small glass of wine with the meal. You could ring your rheumatologist and ask.

Oh great thanks , think Gp being over cautious, as Pred not for RA this time my Asthma, only on 15mg Metx so will enjoy a couple. As finish cause 24 hr before

I don’t know about alcohol and steroids, but I do know I had a glass of wine every day for seven years when I was on Mtx & my Rheumatologist was quite happy with that.

I honestly think the no alcohol rule often means - don’t drink a bottle a day!

The rheumatologist who started me on it, says it’s a very American view, and that Britain has moved on. She said I’d be fine on 14 units. My liver function on 25mg and 10 units has always been fine 🤪👍

My rheumy said as long as I didn,t always finish the bottle he was happy.My liver never rebelled against Mtx ..& I don’t overdo the vino,…even at my advanced age, I can still remember the hangovers of my youth, and I sure don’t want to repeat them!

I’ve been on it 8yrs. I’m also on steroids for life, and have been on a biologic 7yrs. Bloods are always fine

When I first started I was told no alcohol but that’s changed over the years many times and now I’m told under 14 units is ok. It’ll probably change again 🙄

You’ll be fine. I’ve been on steroids for 34 years along with many, many other drugs and have never stoped having a drink now and again. Enjoy the wedding and raise a glass to yourself as well as the bride!

I've been on pred at various doses for past six years with Mtx and a variety of other things. I Def have not been abstaining all that time. Between us before COVID the combination of meds I was on meant I could get really drunk and have no hangover, it was brilliant. Sadly no more and I've kinda given up alcohol now as I've not been feeling great.

it wont matter if you wash the pills down with a bottle of wine. My doctor lets me drink on both them drugs.

Hi, as others have said no one has ever said I can't drink on either prednisolone or methotrexate, in fact, one of the first things I asked when prescribed methotrexate was can I still drink on it as it was just before Christmas when I was first prescribed!

Just adding some reassurance on this too, I’m on 25ml of methotrexate weekly and the advice from both rheumatologists I have dealt with say fine to drink within the 14 unit government recommended level and my liver tests always fine.

I'm on steroids, and have been on and off for 50 years. I have been on methotrexate and other DMARDS and always had a drink. As long as your liver function on your blood tests are fine, then there is no reason why you can't raise a glass and more. Enjoy the wedding! 🥂

i have been on MTX for 20+ years as well as steroids off and on and i have never changed my drinking i drink socially about 2 or 4 x monthly but i have never had any adverse reaction and it has never compromised my liver function but i am not a big drinker . however everyone is different. if you are worried ring your pharmacist or the RA team. As with everything take in moderation is always advise given.

I'm pleased for everyone who has been able to drink while on Methotrexate. I could not. Even the smallest amount would give me the most excruciating upper abdominal pain for hours.
