Lightweight warm duvet!

Biker52 profile image
28 Replies

This might seem an odd question but I am finding the weight of my duvet is affecting how my legs feel at night! They feel pinned down and movement is difficult.

Has anyone any recommendations for a lightweight, warm duvet ….if there is such a thing?

Thank you.

Try the lightweight one from the woolroom.

I had always bought silk duvets….lovely & warm but very expensive & heavy. A friend recommended a polyester one from Argos….I wasn’t keen in tyhe idea….but 10.5Tog cost only about £20 …so I tried it, & it was fine…but I’m a cold body….so then I went up to 13.5Tog for not much more.

It is lovely & warm..but it is heavier.

How heavy is heavy is of course very subjective!🛏️

Soak and Sleep do really good duvets. I have had a very lightweight 9 tog for some years now and it’s warm and cosy but doesn’t feel as if it’s lying heavily on you.

I have a goose down 4.5 tog, which is lightweight and warm. I have hubby in the bed so don’t need a higher tog one but the do make them in higher togs. They are expensive but last ages and you can wash them in the machine and tumble dry. My last one I had owned for over ten years. Have a new one now. Look in the sales too as you can often find good reductions.

I have an 'American style' comforter from Amazon and its perfect! If you search comforter on Amazon, there is a great choice. Very thin, very warm! My bed is 8 foot wide, so its also huge - but they do them in standard sizes as well and at good prices.

I actually found putting duvet covers on impossible. I went for a couple of coverless duvets on amazon. Quite cheap, lightweight and you can throw them in washer. I'm fine with one, but if you are a cold sleeper I guess 2 would be better, and still light.

My arthritis symptoms are mainly in my feet and knees and heavy covers really pain my feet. I also struggle with duvet covers! I like ikea duvets-light, warm, inexpensive, and machine-washable. I skip the duvet cover and just throw the duvet in the washer weekly.

Modern duvets seem to be much lighter in weight but still warm. I have bought them from M&S Silentnight and Asda.

Dunelm have a good selection online. I have bought a number of Fogarty Soft Touch Duvets. Available in all tog ratings. If you look on the website, you can select 'lightweight' options down the left hand side.

Very interesting - I'm been having terrible pains, swelling and tingling in my legs making sleep, movement and bedclothes on legs impossible. Consultant wrote to GP. Blood tests showed Vit D resu;lts for many months have been 'dangerously' low. Now on prescription for high doses only for 3 months then further tests. Ask for Vit D tests - if not already being done? Good Luck and let us know - Nights can be terrible with pain, swelling, severe stiffness and cramps and burning...my sympathy...

Hi I'm prescribed Vit D daily which I take alongside my meds. I'm sure it makes a difference to my immune system as well.

I agree with BoneyC, I have a soft as down made by Fogarty 10.5 tog, from Dunelm, as a chilly mortal, I also put a cheap polyester waffle throw on colder nights. I also use a top sheet, but changed to polycotten as they are lighter weight than Cotten, with the plus the bed is much easier to make. X

A silk duvet over a bed cradle sorted it for me.

Try the NightOwl range (on line.). Extremely light, both summer and winter weights and they just go in The washing machine . No covers to weigh them down or change. I have had them for years and they are worth the money

I feel for you, I can’t stand the weight and pressure of my socks pressing against my toes. My son suggested it might be ‘peripheral neuropathy’ ( damaged nerves). My toes often feel like cold metal blocks that are over sensitive to everything!

Getting back to your question, we changed our quilt to a natural fibre duck down one, it is lighter and more comfortable and we ended up buying a 7 tog rating one as well that suits us for at least half the year. I can push up and make a ‘tent’ which slowly collapses and by then I’m a sleep, I usually put my foot out of the bed. Dunno if this experience helps? Other than this try a couple of small pillows either side of your feet? I usually buy my shoes a size too big for comfort.

I use coverless duvets ...the whole thing goes in the washing machine...no covers to wrestle with 😊. They can be bought online from 'night owl' I have 10.5 tog for the winter and 4.5 tog for the summer months. I just love them.

Hi. I had the same problem until I found a coverless duvet from the Fine Bedding company. Night Lark comes in lots of colours and a summer weight and winter weight - brilliant. No more changing duvet covers, very light, but warm and you can wash it in a household machine and it will dry in a couple of hours. It’s made such a difference for me.

Hope you fine this helpful.

I have a 100% goose down duvet which is incredibly light (compared with feather or synthetic) and very warm. Mine is 10 TOG. Goose Down duvets are expensive but I can't bear the weight of other types and I do feel the cold so need high TOG to be warm enough.

I do find it too warm in summer and switch to a 4.5 TOG for most of the summer and even to a 2.0 TOG if we have a long spell of really warm nights!

You could buy a combination one - two joined together in winter and one of them only in summer.

John Lewis have a very good selection, but other brands are available of course.

Hi Soak and Sleep are great for various weights of duvet. I am the same and have a winter summer duvet which I only use the summer one but as goose down is sufficiently warm.

I have been told to get a pure wool one, they do different weights

I can’t take the weight either and also feel the cold, so finally invested in a single electric over blanket. Sheet, blanket and lightweight cotton/polyester bedspread. Utter bliss.

I can highly recommend a mulberry silk duvet .

They are extremely light and yet warm enough in winter and cool in summer . I’ve never had to change to a winter weight one - as I add an extra lightweight waffle blanket if necessary.

However if you are used to having more of a ‘heavy’ style duvet it does take a bit of getting used to the lighter weight .

I bought one off eBay and second one off eBay for another bed

The second one came from a supplier in China who was exceptionally helpful

. This was around ( Covid) and I’ve never been disappointed with either of them . Hope this helps

Spundown are amazing. Lightweight, thin but warm and come in two parts that you can ‘press stud’ together (although we have never needed both together) and machine washable too. x

I use a polyester filled 10.5 tog duvet which is really nice and light and when I’m feeling cold I have very lightweight ‘teddy’ throw, I think I got both in Dunelm. Extra cosy with the two layers and still nice and light.

I bought an M&S Supremely Washable duvet 7.5 tog for the same reason as yours. It’s very lightweight but warm. Also my husband is always hot whilst I am cold and this duvet ticks all the boxes for me. We use it all year round and if I’m a bit chilly some nights, I just throw a fleece over my half. What’s nice about it is that the sewn channels for the filling go across the duvet instead of down so the filling doesn’t migrate to the bottom of the case. There is also a 10.5 tog and a 13.5 tog for chillier mortals. It’s also a very sensible price compared to some!
