angular cheilitis

I’ve suffer a lot from this I get it around 3/4 times a year but usually lasts about a week. I’m on my third week struggling with this and can’t find a lip balm or treatment. I heard Daktarin oral gel but it’s sold out everywhere and the pharmacy said they even finding it hard to get it in for people who have it prescribed to them. It’s getting to the point I wake up the corner of my lips are so dry and white. As soon as I yawn it all opens up and bleeds. I can’t even kiss my partner as it’s getting so sore. Anyone have any suggestions or creams you may know?

I’m just using vasoline at the moment to moisturise the area and my lips as they are dry and cracked as well

UPDATE:

I sent a picture on an online service my doctors do and they called up and prescribing me a gel for my lips and a cream for my face. They think it’s Angular Cheilitis and prescribing me treatment for a week. If this does not clear up within a week they going to take me in for blood tests 😁

We can’t advise on what to try, has your doctor not prescribed anything if it’s a recurring thing?

I too get this particularly stubborn at the moment. I’m using la Roche-posay cicaplast not a cure but helps a little

Surely you should be going to your GP with this and not trying to cure it on your own. Prescribed antibiotics should get rid of it pretty fast and effectively. As a previous practice nurse I saw quite a few people with this condition but it needs treating by a doctor or a qualified pharmacist.

this might sound really stupid but I have the biggest anxiety calling doctors, once I’m there I’m fine, but it’s the calling up part I talk myself out of. I’ve been to pharmacist and they say Daktarin Oral Gel but it’s out of stock everywhere. I’ve been trying to use the online service I have at my doctors but because I’m on nights I’m never awake for the opening hours for this. I know I just need to call but I can never do it.

Do you have the NHS app? Many GP surgeries have enabled appointment booking on the NHS app.

Oh bless you. That’s not an unusual problem but if you can steel yourself or even get someone else to call initially on your behalf you may find you overcome that big hurdle. Try, as bpeal1 says, using the NHS app to get an appointment. You do need some help with either anti-fungal meds or specific anti-biotics or both as you’ll never shift your condition by just using emollients like vaseline. It’s a horrible thing to have but much nicer when it’s gone and only by seeing a doctor will that happen.

There are other treatments than Daktarin so try an alternative. pharmacist (a qualified one not the counter assistants) to see if they come up with a different solution if that makes it easier than going to the GP. All the best and hope you get it cleared up very soon!

I've had this in the past and the only thing that worked for me is Xolegel (it's a ketaconazole GEL as opposed to cream). It's a prescription and unfortunately I was trying to find it again recently and it's not being manufactured anymore. I'm in the US, maybe wherever you are, you can get it compounded. Or you can try the cream version, ask your doc about it. I looked like the joker, it was so bad and this is the only thing that helped. I feel for you. Good luck

You can try contractubex scar healing gel and let it sit overnight. Another trick is dabbing your lipstick in vodka.

A dermatologist will give you an antifungal or antibacterial that might work.

Also stay hydrated, that's really important and try not to lick your lips.

If it responds to daktarin it must be fungal. Caneston Should work but not sure you can get it not on prescription. However, it sounds like you have it a lot . Ring the Doctor's. I do understand the putting it off but why suffer?

I get this since being on sulfasalazine. (?). pharmacist said it could be folic acid that's lacking so when it comes on I take that plus gp gave me Nystatin, prescription only. If it's bleeding definitely see GP. good luck x

Try a dry mouth product - something like Oralieve Gel or their lip balm which is for really dry lips/mouths. Can get on amazon

Daktarin gel seems to be unobtainable and has been for months. Canestan cream applied frequently might help. Low iron levels can also contribute to making it worse. But see your medical team.

Hi. I have RA & other conditions. I’ve started to get your problem regularly. Only mine lasts months at a time. Very frustrating. Whenver i wear red lippy. I look a bit ‘draculary’. I’ve read it can be to do with a build up of saliva in the corners of our mouth. We often have drool in our mouths after we’ve slept.

Your gp is the one to go to. They’ll probably give you a steroid cream. This condution can also be an autoimmune disease. (The weather doesn’t help either!) Good luck.

UPDATE:

I got a call from doctors Thursday 11th Jan and they prescribed me Daktacort cream. My pharmacy couldn’t get it in till 13th so been on the cream for a day. My lips are getting better they are just dry now but the corners of my mouth still open. But it’s only been a day so we wait. My rash on face has calmed down but it’s now really dry and flaky. Doctors told me to use for a week and if not better they going to do bloods 😁
