For the last year or so I`ve been bending my big toe forward, Not deliberately it just happens you don`t think much of these things. A few months ago my toe did it again but this time was a little different because the pain continued throughout daily life and it felt weak to put any weight on. Come last week and I was just lying down, doing nothing wasn`t moving anything and I moved my leg, not my toe and I think it might of been the smallest of movements and I heard this massive snap in the same toe, The pain level has increased, It`s painful when relaxed, it doesn`t hurt all the time when i`m walking only sometimes, The pain is sometimes getting uncomfortable and tiring, It`s also been throbbing and aching too. I took some photos...The bruising hasn`t fully come out I don`t think and it`s not obvious with the naked eye slightly. I think it`s something to do with the toe joint not sure.
I have contemplated going to the doctors about it however I find it hard to describe the injury to be honest with you, And I feel as though my enquiry won`t be taken as serious if there isnt any bruise or anything there and I would go on to be in pain.

I would go to your GP. My feet look pretty good: and hurt all the time. Which is why I’m awake at 3am….I got referred and had x rays etc. (toddles off to get paracetamol, putting footbed sandals on first).
I developed pain in my right big toe joint quite a few years ago & my GP referred me to a podiatrist. I ended up having a toe joint replacement done just over 7 years ago. It has not been very good because my toes have all moved over to the left & are getting worse. I have been told that all that can be done is an operation to fuse all my toes because they have all dislocated. Also my replacement joint has broken & bits are all over the place in my foot. I would need to have some bone taken from my hip as well. This is apparently a major op & could take a year or so to get over. As I have not yet recovered from being in hospital a year ago I really don’t know what to do. All I would say is to think carefully about your next step ( no pun intended).
I would go to your doctor. The big toe on my left foot started moving to the left about 20 years ago, and the next toe moved to the right. I had the straightened but it has now returned to it’s crossed position.
I had severe pain in my toes 4yr ago, started in both feet with no injury to explain it. The rheumatologist was skeptical it was connected to a rheumatology issue, but did an ultrasound. This confirmed inflammation, so he increased my methotrexate which settled it down. However when the swelling subsided, 2 of the toes have subluxed and are now lifeless. I was offered referal to my a surgeon, but being an orthopaedic nurse I don’t feel it will improve things at the moment, as the pain has subsided. I currently have the same issue occurring in my right foot, the previous time the right foot settled without any subluxation. I’m sure your GP will still investigate even though there is no trauma, or contact your rheumatologist
£40 is well worth spending if it gives you the diagnosis allowing treatment. Personally I’d surrender my entire savings to be able to walk properly again now, wear heels, dance even just to be able to kneel down to wash the kitchen floor, all things affected by my foot.
I imagine you are younger than my 60 years and will heal better and quicker with correct treatment now.
I had very similar but it was becoming painful all the time and cracked as I walked. I had an mri scan as the Dr thought it was a stress fracture and it’s Halluc rigidous. Deterioration of the toe joint that may eventually fuse.
I have a lot of foot pain too, all sorts of pain , mine must be arthritis . In your case as you heard a “ snap” you need to get it X Rayed as soon as your Covid test is clear. Good luck
I don’t know your age but I can tell you from my own experience that you will regret not seeking medical attention for your toe.An untreated leg injury during lockdown 2020 has left me with a limp, existing RA in both feet has got worse and my right foot is in trouble from overworking to support the limping left.
I lost my job during lockdown and have decided to retire early at 60 but could not work now anyway because of the injury. I also can’t dance, run, drive …., my warning is clear, feet are key to mobility and the ability to function and should not be neglected.
I would think the sooner you get some medical advice the better. Feet are very complicated and although they are not included in the examinations our Rheumatologist do….they do need looking after.
The the longer you leave a problem…..the more complicated the solution could be.
Thank you for all replying, At this stage i`m still not sure what to do but obviously can`t do anything for now. After doing research i`m sure it`s turf toe although not 100% sure. It`s been hurting again, with shoes on
As others have said go back to your GP Emma. Did he ever take a blood test to check for inflammation etc potentially related to RD? If he's resisting taking bloods maybe see if anything here could be helpful in requesting, nicely but firmly, that he does. If not then you could try another GP in the Practice, for a second opinion. You've had one issue after another for a while now & no resolution really. It's time to join the dots. It’s tempting to research but Dr Google can send you off on the wrong track so best to let the professionals take control. 😊
