Hi everyone

How’s everyone coping with Covid these days?

I was wondering if anyone has had bad side effects to Folic Acid?

Thanks

Yes I did especially when I was told to increase it to 5 times a week as they thought the side effects I was experiencing was due to the Methotrexate. Folic Acid gave me dreadful wind. It was unbearable. Eventually I realised it was the Folic Acid and went back to once a week. Did help a bit but for a few days I still had dreadful wind. I did have dreadful side effects from the Methotrexate too, but that was different.

Oh that's interesting, I've recently been advised to increase my folic acid to 6 days & started suffering really badly with wind & then bad griping pains & diarrhea, I thought it was the bran flakes I'd started having every morning so reluctantly stopped but, I still have a lot of wind, never thought it could be folic but guess it makes sense, overload of folic

I was told it couldn’t possibly be the folic acid, but I was positive it was so cut back to once a week myself. I immediately felt better but not 100% so I told my consultant again and she thought it could be the lactose in it.

I think I'm just starting to feel the benefit of taking it to counteract the side effects of methotrexate so don't want to stop but, if after a couple of weeks there's still a reduction in them might alternate with bran flakes or just treat myself on the weekend x

There is a liquid form of folic acid that you could try and these which I took.Sorry, not a good photo I’m afraid.

Alternative folic acid.

I didn't have any problems with folic acid when I took it. If you are having problems with the tablets, it might be worth seeing if you can obtain more folic acid in your diet and reduce the tablets? It looks from the literature that is likely to help with side effects.

This might help too if you haven't seen it:

I was prescribed it when pregnant over 35 years ago and it made me really sick etc so it was stopped then tried again for a week with MTX and again really sick , cramps and horrendous upset tummy. So stopped and never again.
