Abatercept (Orencia)

I did the injection which was totally painless on Monday and although a very over engineered syringe it was fine and no bruise. Anyway on Tuesday in the night I woke up feeling really sick. My husband is fine and so not something I ate and since then on and off it returns just for a few minutes but not nice feeling. I've tried sips of water, peppermint and ginger tea. So would like to ask has this happened to anyone else and des it go as the body gets used to the medication? I'm hoping this stuff works as well as Etanercept without the UTI's. The Hiprex for UTI's does seem to work and I wonder why it took so long to get it. I'd never heard of it but it is an OTC item. Might be down to Covid pressures I suppose but why aren't we given information about something OTC that can help for UTI's ??

Wow..thank you for this information! As someone who has frequent UTI's including a bad one after Xmas and put on the incorrect antibiotics 🙄, I have never heard of Hiprex but will be getting some!

Sorry I can't help with your medication side effect query but it does sound like it could be your body adjusting to a new medication but I'm not an expert, as it has coincided with starting your new meds..hopefully you can get hold of your Rheumatology team also to check.

Did you get the Hiprex from Boots?

Best wishes and I hope it subsides soon and thanks again for the info x

I have no experience of your new medication, just wanted to say I hope the nausea settles soon.

HiI have had Abatacept by monthly infusion for several years and the only side effect is sometimes a mild headache the day after. I’m a bit concerned as I am moving at the end of February and undecided as to whether I should change hospitals and will have to find out whether a different rheumatology department will offer infusions.

Thanks for the heads up about med for UTI as I take a half dose antibiotic every day.

I got it on prescription but the internet sales available OTC. Summerrain has it too I wonder if she see's this post if she would say if its working for her too? please. Urology prescribed it its an antiseptic sort of) makes the bugs harder to stick I was told. Anyway it does seem to be working. Tastes vile though......lol x

I really do hope things settle down with your new biologic and the side effects go and it works as well as your last one without any UTI’s. I am stunned my rheumatologist hadn’t changed my biologic with the amount of UTI’s and other infections I have had but nope she is not budging. I had never heard of Hiprex either until seeing my urologist. It is strange that pharmacists etc having mentioned it before now. Still early days to know if it is working or not and I am still on my low dose of antibiotics too. They will review the antibiotics at my next consultation in around 3 months to see about stopping them. I haven’t had another UTI since so that is a real bonus. Had another UTI recently when not on the Hiprex but only been on the Hiprex since the 7th January. x

Rays of hope?? , my new consultant wasn't happy about changing either but to be honest I was disappointed too as the other one worked really well with no side effects except the UTI's. I've noticed Hiprex can cause a bit of indigestion though. But so far so good. If this stuff does work well, I want to know why I've had eleven lots of antibiotics in eighteen months. It just doesn't make sense does it ? xx
