Gastritis

Hi all you lovely people.

Has anyone had or are suffering from Gastritis and what have you done to help ease the symptoms. My doctor who I spoke to on the telephone said it was acid irritation. I’ve spoken to my sister and her symptoms are exactly the same as mine and she was told it’s Gastritis. I have been given Lansoprazole which I have been taking for over 2weeks now but I still have the pain in the chest area.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I have cut out fatty and greasy food.

Thanks so much 🤗

Because your sister has been told she’s got gastritis by her GP does t necessarily mean you’ve got it . You’ve been told acid irritation , I get that and mine isn’t gastritis . I have to take Omeprazole which is identical to your lansoprazole tablet. Once you get this acid you don’t get rid of it that quickly and you might find your on this tablet for a long time . Your right to watch your diet . Good luck

Thank you for your reply. Do you get really bad pain between your breast and shoulder blades.? I don’t really have acid coming up in my throat . It’s just the pain and the feeling full after a small amount of food. Good luck to you as well. Hope you getting some relief . 🤗

I would advise you to eat little and often . Mine is ok but I’ve noticed that there are certain foods that really upset my system. Anyway I take the Omeprazole every morning before breakfast . If you find you need something more the Gaviscon really helps . A drink of milk can help. I’m not sure what your other pains might be. You can ask for a scan if your concerned . Sleep with an extra pillow too . Also a nice hot water bottle can be very soothing. 😊

Thanks Hun. The pain is in the middle of my chest and in between shoulder blades. It was so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. It did ease after a few days and I’ve had an ecg and bp and they were fine. The pain comes and goes and I felt like I had trapped wind. Was awful feeling. I never got the acid coming up though like you do with indigestion. That’s not very often. Yes I will just eat little bits and see how I go. Take care 🤗

You take care too , sometimes when we get anxious we make these pains worse , or so it seems .

I get acid reflux and quite severe heart burn at times. Omeprazole didn't help much, I'm now on pantoprazole, it works much better for me.

I have found that reducing the amount of starchy carbohydrates I eat, and especially bread, has reduced my acid reflux and I hardly get it at all now.

Thank you Lolabridge. Yes I don’t eat much bread and when I do I eat whole meal. Hopefully the change in my diet will help but hasn’t as yet. Stay safe 🤗

Found that caffeine made it worse so avoid that now.

thank you Wobbies. Yes I’m changing to decaf as I do like a cup of coffee and tea. Stay safe 🤗

My brother was told by his Doctor that reg or decaf isn't any good it is the oil in the coffee that gives you the indigestion. You have to stop both. Good luck.

It might be all in my imagination but I’ve started having a big bowl of live yoghurt (the one I have is called kefir yohurt) with honey before I take my meds and one again before bed and I feel better - i had a bout of gastritis after some meds recently and also have reflux at times. Hope this helps.

Thank you Bon1. Yes I believe years of taking medication has affected my stomach as well. I’m changing my diet and I will try yoghurt as you say. Stay safe 🤗

Yes I forgot to say that starting the day with full fat yogurt and fruit has helped a lot. Professor Tim Spector has that for breakfast every morning too.

I’ve had to stop taking anti inflammatories due to gastritis. My gp prescribes peptac liquid (aniseed or mint) when I have a bout. When I have a bout I avoid tea/coffee and any strong foods that would irritate the stomach lining. Eat smaller portions and stick to bland foods. Hope you feel better soon 🤞

Thank you Sarahg62. Yes I have heard Peptac helps so I’m going to try that when I need it. I am finding I don’t really feel hungry and now only eat small portions . Stay safe 🤗

The thing to beware of is any tablet that is not gastric coated which can do huge damage to the stomach. I got gastritis from uncoated sulphasalazine, was unable to eat for two months, lost a lot of weight, eventually lanzoprasol worked, but my stomach remains touchy. If in doubt check with the pharmacist. Makes one wonder why anything is uncoated.

Yes I agree hun. I’ll ask chemist next time I go. Thanks for your reply . Stay safe 🤗

Hi there,I had haemorragic gastritis about three years ago (brought on by anti-inflammatories). It was confirmed by a gastroscopy and I was put on a high dose of omeprazole for 2 months (weaned off gradually) to get rid of it.

I have since redeveloped it (seems to be Enbrel this time) and am awaiting a gastroscopy to confirm November 17th - oh the joys of ra medications….

I hope you feel better soon. Perhaps you need a gastroscopy to get some certainty about what you are dealing with? X

Aw poor you. Yes I’ll see how I go hun. I believe the drugs have to take some responsibility as my diet isn’t really that bad. Stay safe 🤗

By the way, I buy low acid coffee from Amazon (I have just one cup a day), but I find that easier to stomach than the ordinary one - I also drink it black since I no longer have dairy (or gluten). X

Gastritis was one of the strange illnesses I developed a few years before I started R A. A camera down into my stomach showed inflammation and I was given omeprosole, which helped but did not cure it. After a lot of experimenting with what I ate, I discovered the old food combining diet which is basically only eat fruit on an empty stomach, do not eat starch and protein in the same meal, eat at meal times and do not drink liquid with/immediately after a meal. No guarantees it will work for you but it settles my stomach. I eat normally most of the time. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thank you so much. Yes I think it’s a combination of drugs nd diet for me. I’ve been taking ra meds since 1987. I’m not to bad now. Just watching what and when I eat. 🤗
