dermal fillers

hi guys! i’m wanting dermal fillers (lip fillers) i’ve had them previously but not been happy with them so im going elsewhere this time.

i’m currently taking hydroxychloroquine and my aesthetic nurse wants approval/confirmation that it’s okay for me to go ahead with the fillers whilst on medication.

my rheumatoid nurse & consultant told me it’s down to my down discretion and cannot give me approval so i’m unsure who i’m supposed to go to for the go ahead. should i ask my GP? i’ve had them before and been fine so i’m abit unsure what to do. has anyone had this issue?

Hi Olivia, I think after 18 months of lockdown etc and constant Zoom and MS Teams call a few of us are thinking of having a few tweaks..I don't think of it as vanity but something to make us feel better in ourselves. Plus Botox can help with TMJ issues.

I've had the same issue and been told the same thing, it's down to you and as long as you are not on steroids etc, they're extra cautious with us as we're on immune suppressants which can affect our healing process. I've not had anything done yet need to get my health sorted first and if I do it will by my Dentist who knows my medical history, yes I can get them cheaper elsewhere but I want it done safely and by someone who knows my medical history.

I am not sure if your GP won't say the same but worth a try as they won't want the responsibility, I will be interested to see what other replies you get 🙂

Good luck!

It is but at the end of the day they don't want to commit as their job is treating your condition I've asked my Rheumatology nurses and she was about a bit puzzled tbh as didn't know what I was on about at first but said ok as long as not on daily steroids. , i will maybe I will ask my Consultant at next appointment who also does private plastic surgery treatment as he may know better, luckily my dentist does not want anything in writing..but she knows me and that I have checked the situation, I guess I will have to sign a consent form anyway?! They must have come up against this before as well as many many people have this done. Good luck with the GP 🙂

yeah! i’ve had them before and been completely fine so i’m abit unsure as to why i cant have them now. i’ve even offered to come off my medication as it doesn’t work well for me either and wouldn’t make a difference whether i was on it or not. aslong as i sign a consent form myself i’m puzzled!

They need to cover themselves as they don't want a legal case if something goes wrong which is perfectly understandable. It's good as well they are asking for confirmation it's ok to go ahead. We're just piggy in the middle though I'm afraid, hopefully someone else will give you some answers on here too who had been in the same situation 🙂

I doubt whether there’s been any research at all into this, and any real knowledge whether there is a greater risk of problems with dermal fillers for people with RA or people on our meds. So unlikely that any professional doctor will give you “approval” to do this. It’s your decision….

But hydroxy is hardly immune suppressant at all, so the least risky of all the RA drugs.

yeah i agree, i feel like they’re asking abit too much from me, i don’t think anyone wants to give ‘approval’ so they’re not responsible incase anything goes wrong. aslong as i sign a consent form and agree to going ahead with it i don’t see what else i can do!!

I have Botox and am fine with it. My dermatologist has advised me I can’t have any fillers due to me being on methotrexate. I’m on Hydroxychloroquine as well. I’m lucky I can have Botox because it makes me feel so much better. All the pain I’ve had with RA, I need a little pick me up. Botox gives me that, as it takes years off you. I look rested and fresh and I’m 50. In fact the supermarket cashier looked at me once not long ago when buying alcohol !!

haha i agree. i love the confidence boost as RA has stripped me from any confidence i ever had!!

I wouldn't have them done, but thats just me. Your drugs affect you in many ways and it might affect you differently now and your health is different to when you last had fillers and it might not be suitable for you now. xxxx

I would write a list of pros - the things for it and the cons - the things against. For me the risk of infection and something going wrong would outweigh the appearance, but then I don't bother much with how I look and never have.

i’m 21 so confidence is a big issue for me. they make me feel better :)

Fillers aren't recommended for people with RA and on immunosuppressants as the procedure can provoke a flair.

Hi, in case you can't have any fillers, I've seen a lipstick I think it was by Avon and it's meant to plump your lips up, sorry can't remember what is called but I expect there are other brands, hope this helps a bit, best wishes Sarah

I think vanity is a good thing. A vain person is always a clean person. A good wholesome desire to cut a good figure is a sign of intact mental health. Also, I used to work with a young lady named Vanity and got used to the word. Con amore Bxx

I'm not in the least bit vain but I am always clean and tidy, and my mental health is quite ok I struggle to understand your statement 🤷‍♀️🤔

I totally agree with your statement. You don't have to be vain to be clean! X

I don’t know why you struggle. I was just stating my thoughts. Nothing to do with any specific individual on this Earth. Con amore bx

I got a piercing last year and it took 18mths for it to heal. Shortly after I got cellulitis and have now had it five times since. I can't help but feel it was started by the piercing.I had asked my consultant about it and he thought would be ok.

Dermal fillers are in there a long time and whilst you might go to a different practitioner there is nothing to say they will be any better...they could be worse...

It is always your decision but I wouldn't chance anything like that again.

This is an interesting article about how people have changed behaviours towards beauty treatments due to Covid etc…

theguardian.com/us-news/202...

I live in France, and every tiny village will have its “Institut de beauté” and a large proportion of men and women will visit them regularly. Taking care of your appearance in a more structured way than in UK is a normal daily activity. So completely understand the confidence boost this can bring.

But at 21 it does seem very early to be using fillers too often - whether or not you have RA. Might it be an idea to consult a beautician about other approaches that might build your confidence and perhaps be more sustainable in the long run?

(And speaking as someone with rather more years on their face, absolutely anyone under 30 looks just glorious to me as their skin is so beautiful!)

oliviagodfreyxx profile image

i don’t want botox or anything like that i just want fuller lips :) i’ll definitely have a look at the article!! thankyou x
