hi everyone hope you are all well. not an arthritis related question but a covid related question.
im due to have my second dose of the vaccine this saturday the 1st. im 20 years old and i had the astra zeneca vaccine as my first dose.
i heard they have stopped giving astra zeneca to those under 30, however if you had your first dose of astra zeneca youre expected to have the second dose of the same vaccine too. is this correct?

Hi you lovely young thing! I’d ask your GP practice manager what the GPs are advising for your age as they may already have some plan in place and haven’t told you yet. x
Yes, that’s correct. The age rules tied to blood clots that are very rare. They have occurred after dose 1, so if you had no issues (as most won’t) you are fine it’s said (based on those who have had clots so far) on dose 2. I actually tried to get Moderna dose 2 just because of the clinical trial efficacy (94.5%) but was denied and given the “full explanation” of all this. I had looked into it prior so their response was expected :). We’ll all have different technologies come fall boosters, and it’s not an issue with any other vaccine to switch up techs (it actually can increase overall efficacy in past vaccine trials where they mixed technologies), but they are waiting for the COVID vaccine studies where they are mixing vaccines to see efficacy and then, if all looks good, allow it here. In Germany, for example, they ARE allowing a different vaccine tech (Pfizer) if you had AZ first. Every country is different!
My daughter is 22 and she has had both Astrazeneca vaccines. As far as I know, they're not mixing them atm - but call your GP for their advice 🙂 Her conversation with me went something like 'Mum, I have a much greater chance of getting a blood clots with my contraceptive pill.' And that was me - told 🤣
