Hi everyone, hope everyone is feeling well.

Can anyone please tell me if you can have your hair coloured when on Metz? I’m still new to all this and very unsure of simple everyday things .

By Metz do you mean methotrexate? If so, I've been having my hair colored on a regular basis ever since I was put on it 11 yrs ago and haven't had any problems🐰

Thank you for that. My hairdresser wanted advice as when I started with R.A. a few months ago i started getting reactions to dye so I havnt had my hair done in months and look like the woman in the Adams family😂x

If you're getting reactions since you started with RA maybe it might be worth checking with your rheumatology dept , just in case there could be a link?I'm desperate to get mine done - I only managed to get to the hairdresser 3 times last year😁

If you have already had a reaction...I’d get a list of chemicals in the product your hairdresser uses & send it to your rheumy nurse... she can run it by the Rheumatology pharmacist who will know the answer re Methotrexate.I know how you feel ......grey roots are not a good look.....but years ago a friend of mine’s head & face swelled up like a football & turned bright read from some sort of allergic reaction to a hair product...& ever since...I have been a real nerd & although I have been using the same

Product for years...I always do the patch test the day before.

Mine are not roots anymore, it’s half my hair🤣 really not a good look. I didn’t even think about dye until I went for my eyebrows to be tinted, due to lockdown the place where I go had to do a patch test as it was over the time allowed without a test and I had an almost immediate reaction. That was in August, god I look a mess☹️ I wouldn’t mind but I can’t even pluck the dam things due to my bloody hands. Shame the bloody sideburns that Elvis would be proud of are jet black😂 typical.

Moan over and thank you for your advice.

Stay well, you are all lovely people on here the way you help each other xx

Have you thought of doing your colour yourself? If your reaction was when you had your eyebrows tinted...that might well be because the beautician used hair dye..not special dye for eyebrows? Some do do that!

Of course you absolutely have to do the patch test ...but I use a mousse dye....& a child could do it.....because unlike regular hair dye it doesn’t drip all over the place...I find it lasts about 8 weeks.....but do still bring up the subject with your rheumy nurse before you have a go.

I used to dye my own hair and it was never right, also I struggling even washing my hair at the moment so wouldn’t be able to dye it. I once did my hair a lovely medium brown, it came out purple, 😂 I wasn’t born to be a hairdresser that’s for sure 😊xx

The mousse really is fool proof...when I broke my arm ‘Im indoors’ did it perfectly...the colours are sensible too....I am sort of muddy blonde...& I am very tempted by the lovely Silver Grey tones...I was wary how often you could use it so I phoned the help line & said you safely re-colour after two weeks...still haven’t dared go grey...maybe when I’ve got a tan....if we get a summer!

in reply toAgedCrone

That sounds interested Aged. Where do you buy the mousse from?

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to

You can get it in Boots or a lot of the supermarkets sell it. It’s called

John Frieda Precision Foam Colour Mousse...or something like that.

I have had Dermatitis in my ears in the past so I was very wary when first told about it...but so far so good!

in reply toAgedCrone

Thank you for the info Aged. I also get dermatitis in my ears. I haven't been able to go in a shop for a year now and could only go in occasionally before that as I am in a wheelchair, but I will know what to look for now.

You can see it online at Boots & I think maybe on Amazon Happy Colouring!

I've had bad reactions from hair dye for years before Mtx so now have porn hair- you know, forty shades of grey. You've already had excellent advice so I just wanted to say that your sense of humour will see you through. Thanks for the smile 😁

Thank you for that. Sometimes laughing about things is the only way to deal with stuff. I saw my consultant on Thursday and he told me my R.A. is aggressively active at the moment🤣really !!would never have guessed, the swelling and severe pain wasn’t a clue🙄 He is really lovely so not complaining.

Take care xxx

You must have some gorgeous long hair for that, I am so envious. How old is your daughter?

Daughter is 12, she loves doing plaits. In primary school she was always plaiting other children's hair - and the teachers'!My hair used to be dark brown with a lot of red. I started highlighting it when I started to get a lot of grey which sort of blended it in, then after a while I asked for less and less blonde so that the grey would take over. Basically there was never a cold turkey time. It was nice and gradual.

It's quite fine and I think the picture is deceptive! Grey hair is quite fragile and porous so needs more thoughtful care. Heat is deadly, so I do a rough dry to slightly damp and then tie it up to make it lie flat, it's the only way to keep the shine in and stop it from going frizzy. Then I put serum/oil type things on the ends to stop humidity making it frizz.

But apart from that, it's easy to care for. Sometimes I wrap it in a silk scarf at night. It's very long, almost to my waist now but in OK condition. Because it's fine, having a 'style' is difficult. I think it would require a lot of faffing about in front of the mirror and I just can't be bothered 😄 and lately the elbows probably wouldn't allow it! It's almost white near the roots and if it was cut short it would look really sparse. x

It really is beautiful . Did you ever watch I’m a celebrity get me out of here, there was an ex model on, Janice somebody, and everyone was talking about her hair, it just got wilder & wilder as the weeks passed. That’s my hair. Bet your jealous now 😂he he

I'd get a patch test before the colour from your hairdresser. I get my hair dyed on all my RA drugs and been ok, but certainly once or twice I've had an itchy head so swapped brands. And I cant wait to get back to the hairdresser although I'm liking my hair long which has surprised me as its always just been above shoulders.

I actually asked my rhuemy when I first went on MTX if it’s ok to have my hair dyed and she said it’s fine

I dye it myself and use a box dye. Not had a problem - but - as others have said a patch test is best. I really want to just let mine go grey but haven't got the guts - as soon as I see a centimetre of grey another box comes out🙄🙄

For anyone wanting a natural option, I highly recommend Henné Color. You can buy it from Holland and Barrett as well as Amazon. Different formats available - pre mixed “crème”, powder to mix yourself, or coloured shampoo for a quick top up. The auburn shade is particularly effective xx

I can't answer your question because I am not on that drug but this is a very safe hair coloursdanielfieldmailorder.co.uk/...

I take Methatrexate and have never had any trouble with my hair being dyed and to be honest, it never occurred to me that it might cause problems.
