Talk to your medical team about your fears. Basal cell cancers are very common, usually easy to remove, and rarely cause more significant problems.
Main cause is sun damage, either natural or sun beds, so no way of knowing whether it was the Benepali or not. Has anyone else in your family had a skin cancer? As runs in families.
But really don’t worry as sounds as if caught early so that should be the end of it.
My other half doesn't have RA and had surgery for basal cell carcinoma - sometimes called a rodent ulcer - last year. A very quick procedure with no awful after effects
Yes, I had one removed almost two yrs ago. Very quick & painless. Mine was almost certainly down to sun damage. I use to love the sun. I just take Hydroxy so it wasn’t down to that. As the other folk have said always best to check with your RD team. Take care.
Himself is a sun-worshipper and, at 76, I can't see him stopping. It goes without saying that if you are worried contacting your rheumy team is the best course of action
I’m sure you are a bit anxious but try not to let it overwhelm you. I understand basal cell carcinoma is relatively common and can be easily treated. I wouldn’t know if Benepali has caused it but I gather sun damage is the main cause. So it’s good news that you are being treated next week. Hope it goes smoothly.
Glad you are going fast for your op and wishing you all the best. I know a couple of people close to me .. but not related .. who have had malignant moles removed and the ops have been very successful. x
Hi. That's good you are getting sorted soon. Do talk to the team about your treatments to get peace of mind. But as far as I'm aware that type of skin cancer can be sun related or run in families xxx let us know how you get on 😍
Don’t worry I had a BCC removed about 5 years ago......went back on medication & no repercussions. The BCC was 100% blamed on over exposure to the sun.
A lot of RA meds are reported as “can cause cancer”....but in fact not many do.
Relax ....your Rheumatologist& Oncologist will discuss your treatment & may or may not change your drugs.....but if they haven’t told you they are going to change your treatment now ....they probably won’t have to.
I have had many basal cell cancers removed over the years. They are considered to be the least worrying as they are usually superficial. Although all the drugs we take increase the risk of these due to the small suppression of our immune system it’s possible you would have developed it anyway.Taking these drugs means we just have to make sure we protect our skin . High factor (50) sun protection in the summer and even factor 20 in the winter according to my dermatologist. I’m sure it will be fine, try not to worry.
Yes I had one removed from my shoulder in 2017. Ashamed to admit, as I said to the dermatologist, that I’d had it for about 10 years with no changes! Painless to remove and no further problems but the consultant did remind me that many ra drugs cause sensitivity to the sun and to use factor 50 protection at least. My dad also had one removed years ago.
Thank you... I just got back from my op feeling sore as they have cut out an area the size of a 5p piece and open wound (however is covered) I was told to change dressing every 3days and send photos to the hospital to see how I’m getting on. If it heals ok they will be taking skin from behind my ear to replace skin on my nose. Also told I’m now at high risk of cancer and have to be checked over regularly so I’m bit concerned. I’m glad this part is over and just bit sore with a headache x
Glad to hear it went well. It’s amazing how well these things heal and with a skin graft you should look back to normal in no time. It’s good to hear that they will do regular skin checks as if they find something suspect they can treat it before surgery is necessary. Just today I’ve had a few lesions done with liquid nitrogen which should get rid of them
