Can they force me back whilst sheilding?

Hello everyone, so I just want to know if you are sheilding and if your employer says your time is up and unless you get another letter I will have to come back into the office to work as of next week , do I have to? , is there such a thing as an expiry date? (in Wales) or to get another letter!! to continue sheilding, I was fortunate to get mine second time around.

I am not keen on going back into a large office just yet even if it is on a rota schedule, my meds and health issues have not changed. I think that being sheilding should be as it says but am worried that they will go down the route of halfpay/sick pay as it is a very real possibility.

Advice most welcome and thank you.

Thank you for replying, I was unaware that there were more letters coming out

I thought it was just the one and that would cover me until the "all clear" but it looks like my boss was right, call going to rheumatology tomorrow I guess. Thanks again and stay safe.

Hi Pat. If your employer is giving you a hard time do contact NRAS and ask for their help and advice. I recall someone else was in a similar position and the commented that NRAS had been terrific in telling them how to handle the situation. Good luck!

Have you been furloughed? As the furlough scheme goes on to the end of August, and the agreement should state something about returning to work. After August I think it transfers to sick pay.

And are you in the extremely clinically vulnerable group, or the vulnerable group? As I think that makes a difference now.

But generally your employer has a duty for your health and safety and needs to show that they have put in place measures to protect you.

This is the UK Government guidance, but I don’t know what the variations are for Wales. Stuff about work is on the last page

Is there no way you could get some kind of working from home set up in place if you’re office based?

I really feel for you. I'm lucky because it's reasonably easy for me to work from home and my employer is happy that I don't want to go to the office because it frees one of the reduced number of desks for someone else. I was searching for any UK updates and I've just found this itv.com/news/wales/2020-06-... Hope it helps :-)

I have just received another letter from the Chief Medical Officer for Wales advising me to continue shielding until 19th August. It includes advice about going out for exercise only. NOT to work!

I would also look at the date and wording of your original letter. For example, my letter is dated in early April and the wording says "12 weeks from the date of this letter" which I took to mean (and notified HR accordingly) that I was shielding until at least mid-July. I may have forgotten to tell HR that I'm no longer shielding - I really must go back and check my emails lol

I’m in Scotland and received 2nd letter yesterday to carry on shielding till the end of July, but I could go out for exercising eg walking cycling running etc with a member of household or on my own from 18thJune..The way I understood it was if you had already been shielding this was to carry on for now,but I could be wrong, maybe you could get in touch with your gp or rhuemo team.
