I'm in the US and, as do we all, need some distraction. I love British comedy/dramedy and would like some suggestions of shows to stream. Some shows I like are The Royales, Outnumbered, Doc Martin, Keeping Up Appearances, Are You being Served?, Cuckoo, and there's an Australian show that I can't remember the name of, but very popular. It's about a young doctor and her grown siblings and their parents who are divorced. Dad is a real estat agent. Some of you will know the name I'm sure. Anyway, I desperately need some funny stuff to watch so I thought I'd get some opinions. Please post! π
Suggestions for streaming British comedy?!!! - NRAS
Suggestions for streaming British comedy?!!!
Have you tried Googlebox? Not a comedy show as such but I find it funny, and it also gives you a quick idea of other shows you might like to watch (or not!)
Never heard of it, but will check it out. Thanks! π
Last of the summer wine about three old retired boys and is hilarious. They act like they were kids.xxx
One foot in the grave. A bit more modern, and very silly is Friday night dinner.
I loved Peter Kay's Car Share, Miranda, Gavin & Stacey, Extras. Obviously oldies such as Faulty Towers, Drop the Dead Donkey, Bread, Yes Minister (& Yes Prime Minister) Blackadder, The Liver Birds, Dinnerladies. Just a few for you to look up. Pretty sure most, if not all, of them were BBC productions, if that helps.
If you want something to get your teeth in to and have to really think (some of these boggle my brain!), Line of Duty is excellent, my lads swear by Sherlock (too much for my MTX brain-fog mind to cope with these days) and Endeavour.
I do love Miranda, just got a couple left to watch having downloaded all of them at Christmas.
Supposed to be crime but more of a comedy . . . Bulletproof (Sky)is good too. Second series on here at the moment.
Ooo, yes, Line of Duty... Silent Witness, The Bodyguard & Killing Eve too, but think the US may have had the last two around the same time as us & possibly too soon to watch as repeats, too freshly remembered.
Silent Witness, forgot that one and only just watched the last series from the Sky box, been sat there a while. Spooks has been on iplayer recently.
I used to love Morse and then Lewis.
Not really managed to get in to Killing Eve. Did love Bodyguard. Also enjoyed Broadchurch.
One I love watching with our eldest (he went back half way through last year so we had to talk about it in our weekl ycalls) is No Offence, brilliant stuff.
Thank you for enjoying British comedy/ drama, there's a lot of good suggestions already Dinnerladies (with out dear late Victoria Wood), Butterflies (one from a few dacades ago) Absolutely Fabuolus (or Ab Fab), Vicar of Dibley, Peter Kays Car Share, Rising Damp (from a few decades ago), Miranda, Not Going Out and probably lots more to keep those 'chuckle muscles' going. (something one of our late great comedians Ken Dodd or 'Doddy' used to say). Hope you find something you like, take care.
How could I forget Vicar of Dibley?!? I used to use the Darcy Bussell clip when teaching reflection symmetry! You have to catch their interest any way you can.
Forgot vicar of Dibley ππ
Such good suggestions from all, I would add 'Man about the house' old but very good. 'The Good Life' excellent and quite timely. If your into films, I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead, Run fat boy run, The infidel, _ There's always the classic 'Carry on.. ' films, rather silly but good if you just want to enjoy their silliness and harmless fun. I particularly liked 'Carry on Constable'. Some of the old 'Ealing' productions are timeless comedies and have some superb character actors. 'Ghosts' was different and funny (BBC), there's also 'Horrible Histories' aimed at children but usually has me in stitches. The list of everyone's contributions should keep you going through numerous lockdowns I think. Let us know which ones you enjoy. Wishing you some happy watching.
Horrible histories for definite . Writing is fabulous great way to learn history while having a chuckle. I rewatch these all the time
I agree. Brings out the inner child in us all! Have you watched the new Crackerjack - I watched one - initially by accident but my goodness, I haven't laughed so much for ages.
No must watch
Oh when is Crackerjack on? Surely Friday not 5 to 5?
No idea. Came across it by accident - goodness knows why I was looking at CBBC, perhaps it was close to Horrible Histories. The children were hilarious - reminded me of my teaching days!!
Sheer silliness - Mr Bean
Only fools and horses. British classic.
Use to love one foot in the grave.
Mrs Brown ( Irish comedy) not everyoneβs taste.
Miranda
Carry on films . My 16 year old has just started watching... again old classics
Big vote for me is Only Fools and Horses. Del Boy falling through the open bar flap, seen it loads of times and it still makes me laugh out loud.
πππ
Father Ted, Dads Army, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, The Windsors, (Catherine is a travellor flogging pegs and William just wants to live in a council house. Its great and Charles is so funny its said the real Royal family are supposed to watch it. Chanel 4 has Black Books and a lot of quirky stuff.
OMG how did I forget Father Ted ππππ and blackadder .. gonna have to re watch so many ... bottom is gonna get bigger ππ
Mr Bean from way back, and 2.4 Children and old films like Lavender Hill Mob and Titchfield Thunderbolt. Best film for being unintentional funny I think was Kevin Costner in Robin Hood and Alan Rickman cancelling Christmas.
Oh yes father Ted, Mrs Doyl e ah go on go on go on go on!! Perhaps not one to watch in front of the children.....Father Jack with his 'language'
My Ambition is yo be father Jack ππ
I'm more like a Mrs. Doyle when my friend and I go out for coffee and cake, there's a scene in Father Ted where he drops her off and she and her friend meet up in a cafe and both insist on paying, which ends up in a brawl and them being arrested. 'No put you're money away I'll pay, no I'll pay' Meanwhile Father Jack stumbles across an A A meeting without his glasses on and stands up shouting DRINK DRINK and they all think he's 'letting his inner demons out' and in a stereo typical way are saying 'We understand, let it out' etc. It cracks me up.
You'll know the Real Housewives franchise, well we have Real Housewives of Cheshire, it might be worth a look if you like that type of programme, if only to try to work out if the accused did actually do what (most often Dawn) they are accused of in the latest rumpus. She could start an argument in an empty room that one! It's my guilty pleasure.
And mine but I do wish they'd stop deforming their faces with botox and fillers. They're all gorgeous women that have no need.
They look like they've got two Pringle crisps as lips, with all these lip plumpers and fillers!
Unfortunately if there's a plenitude of dosh it happens Kiki, after all how many designer bags, shoes & frocks can one person need?! Lots to spend, not always wisely eh? I'd to see how each was before the botox though wouldnβt you π
I used to love the Two Ronnies, The Comedians, Merlin, Doc Martin, One Foot in the Grave and many more.
For some reason, the Vicar of Dibley used to amuse me and Miranda hart - just silliness.
I don't like Miranda or Vicar of Dibley no idea why just never made me laugh also never liked Mrs Brown but Bread was funny. Odd how we all see humour differently.
Bread was funny. No, I donβt like Mrs brown either!
Father Ted in the other hand, used to make me laugh
I loved Grandad in Bread "I want to go to the toilet" π and I am with you on Mrs Brown too - I loved it when it first came out but now he's flogging it to death and the same with All Round to Mrs Brown - I think he gets too personal with that to the point of embarrassing the guests and that's not on.
Early mrs brown was the best. Use to go to the theatre long before it reached telly. All the womenβs make up would have run through tears of laughter . Once 3 nuns from our local convent were there. Never seen them laugh so much,
I don't like Miranda or Vicar of Dibley either - not funny in my opinion but then I don't like Dawn French (or Jennifer Saunders) - just my opinion.
I loved Mum too! I like that style of humour.
Haha! I love that show.
Thank you everyone for all the great suggestions. I've come across some of these titles on Netflix. Will try them out. I have Acorn TV also. Got it to watch the newest Doc Martin and kept it. I've been watching some American and British detective shows, been watching documentaries and real life murder shows. Realized I really need some comedy after watching some old American show like Cheers, Frasier and The Office that my mood improved. Definitely need that at the moment. I'm quarantined here watching news of the US starting to gradually open up hoping the inevitable second wave of COVID won't be as bad as I fear it will. Thankfully, most states are being responsible. Some downright reckless though.
Enjoy.. stay safe
I loved Mum, I hope they make more.
Catherine Tate Show, Victoria Wood (Acorn Antiques) anything with Julie Walters in. Harry Enfield and Cathy Burke too.
We love Outnumbered too but it's so close to our real lives sometimes it's torture!
Also, very new to us is Friday Night Dinner which is quite experimental and not everyone's cup of tea but the Dad - Martin is the funniest character and gives me a proper laugh.
Been forced to watch The Inbetweeners with my 15 yr old son and although it is extremely rude, it is very, very funny.
Last night I subscribed to Britbox and discovered there are several titles there which you've posted. Just what I need at the moment. Thank you all for your great suggestions!
