Hi folks , so I went to see rheumy yesterday re my latest flare , I was given another steroid shot and now to start 10 mg methotrexate, and 5mg folic acid for the 6 days , and to keep on the hydroxy, I voiced my concern about starting this med with all the covid virus thing going on and the nurse put things into perspective in a way , saying that cancer patients and people who have had transplants etc, have to keep taking there meds , I can only praise my nursing team they have been brilliant with me and I was sat chatting with the nurse for nearly an hour as she explained about taking the drugs , anyway that’s enough from me just thought I would update you all and any advice always welcome..a slightly worried

The nurse sounds very sensible and caring. Of course being on all these drugs is a concern, but so is unmedicated RD, which has the potential to cause health issues too.

I hope methotrexate helps you, best wishes.

The nurses are very helpful, they are there to listen. Pleased you have started on medication. I hope she has put you at ease, don’t be worried if you need to contact them before your next appointment, they are there to listen, even if it’s by phone, if they cannot get you in for an appointment.

Best wishes xx

That’s great to hear, I’ve heard, some nurses don’t always listen, understand, not sure whether they’re rushed. it’s best to write questions down. At the hospital I attend there are 2 nurses working with RA Consultants , one of the nurses also run the Osteoporosis clinic x

Hi Jayne

Sounds like a great nurse!

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is the anti malarial drug used as a DMARD and worked very well for me, in combination with Methotrexate (MTX). HCQ is also one off the RA drugs being used against COVID-19 in Japan. China approved Acterma (RA drug) for the same purpose; and also large doses of Vitamin C.

Canada has just isolated the specific coronavirus causing the pandemic.. so they are now working on methods of destroying it ie vaccine.

The structure of a virus includes fatty substances which break apart when soap and water is applied vigorously for 20 seconds; fine for prevention of infection from any virus!

I hope you notice benefits from the drug therapy in good time ie about 12 weeks.

Thank you for that info charisma , I am going to take my first dose on Sunday after tea and from reading on the forum I need to drink plenty of water on that day ...it’s looking like a lot of the drugs we take are hopefully going to be very useful in the future x

Hi your nurse sounds like mine. Can email or ring whenever I’m worried. I’ve being on mtx a few years now. I always drink loads before and after it helps. I wouldn’t be without now. Just like the rest of you always worried being on Dmards with this new virus. Stay well stay save 🙂

My take on it is that in most cases we are on a small dose of a chemotherapy drug so fingers crossed we shouldn't be too high risk!

Think positive, be sensible, be cautious and above all life goes on so enjoy it x
