Does anyone get "the runs" after taking Folic Acid please? I don't take it for the 6 days, usually once or twice a week for this very reason. Would welcome comments from fellow users, thank you!

Hi, when on methotrexate I take folic every day except injection day and haven't experienced this. Chat to your gp about it as we don't all get same side effects from meds. You may find it's something entirely different that is causing your tummy upset. GP is best.

Yes, talk to your GP. And you could also ask whether swapping to natural folate, rather than folic acid, might make a difference.

Sorry to learn how medication is adding to the trials of having RA. I’m obviously in the minority but my RA Consultant has me take only ONE 5mg folic acid tablet two days before 25mg methotrexate once a week and I’m also on Benepali. These seem to keep me on an even keel except for fatigue.

Hi QAGS. I don't have this problem and like Shalf, I take folic acid every day (5 mg each day) except on the day I have MTX. I have just checked the leaflet in my box under possible side effects and diarrhea is not listed but bloating and wind is. Check the leaflet in your box to see what it says. x

Hi, That sounds awful. I have nausea, and a grumbly stomach with the folic acid. I thought it was the methotrexate but i tested myself by abstaining etc and it is the folic acid. So now i have 5mg the day after and 1 mg for 4 days and then nothing for two days. Mind you it could be both. Either one, its miserable.

I sometimes suffer with irregular bowel movements after taking it in the morning but not everytime - it does contain lactose so a few people I know have had similar issues

Not while taking it with methotrexate but continuing it afterwards I did. It stopped when I stopped taking it.
