Methotrexate

My mother has Ankylosing spondylitis, since her teens from an accident she now has developed another pscoriaic arthritis. She has now been put on methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine, and prednisone. Her pain is still bad.. she really loves natural health, she wondered if she could take cbd oil, when weve asked doctors etc, they only know about drugs not cbd oil. Has anyone had these drugs along with cbd oil. Hoping the cbd will help with pain, as it takes 3 to 6 months for methotrexate to work!

Put CBD oil in search box top right and you’ll get lots of posts about it.

Hydroxychloraquin is not usually prescribed for PsA. I was originally prescribed it but once diagnosis was confirmed as PsA, the rheumatologist said that it wasn’t appropriate for that.

Hiya Gardenaddict, welcome. Well, possibly the reason the doctors you’ve asked don't know anything about CBD oil only drugs is that they're unable to prescribed CBD oil, only drugs. Other than that they can't recommend it from a professional point of view because there's no guarantee it will work, or of the quality.

Some here have tried it, had various responses to it but what many here have reported is those you are able to buy in health shops, sold as food supplements (as are those bought online), aren’t of much help generally because they are weaker in strength, but that of course depends on the type of pain you're expecting it to help with.

Buying online, & there are many companies out there, can be a minefield. Another problem is if someone recommends one type or strength understand that it may not work for you in the way that it does for them. It can be an expensive way to try & treat pain, especially if you're unlucky & don't happen upon the one that helps first or even second time of trying.

I'm not anti cannabidiol, I’ve discussed it many times with my GP (as a friend) as my h can't take strong pain relief but lives with constant pain & would dearly wish to find something he can tolerate. Her opinion is untiL what's available at the moment is regulated you've no guarantee what you're buying.

I could go on but it wouldn’t be of help to your Mum! Personally I’d steer clear of trying any natural product whilst her Rheumy is trying to control her PsA, see how they work first. If she needs pain relief just now it would be better in my mind to ask her GP to prescribe for her. Once she's settle on her meds then maybe experiment a bit but be well advised. I’ve been taking MTX 10 years now, injecting the last 9 & it really has been a good med for me when 3 other DMARDs failed me. You don't say when she started treatment but effects of MTX can often be felt before the 12 weeks generally given, & once it's reached it's potential it works well for her. 😊

Thanks, its encouraging to know methotrexate has helped, we ve just got to persevere, think my mum feels a bit nervous, as 3 new drugs. But if she can get through the first few weeks, then worth it if it helps.

With luck the prednisolone will do as it should & deal with any pain she has in the short term whilst the other two build up. All the best.

I was put on Methotrexate a couple of years ago. They are a very good pain relief medication, but I was taken off them because they messed my blood up really bad. Have been put on several different Rheumatoid Arthritis medications, but alas they don't agree with me. Prednisolone is good for Rheumatoid, but you can only take them for a certain amount of time. BECAUSE THEY THIN THE BONES.

Have just started using CBD OIL, don't know if they will help with the pain as i also have Chronic Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis. But when you are in so much pain, you will try anything..

The thing is, YOU DON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY.

If you're Mum do decide to try the CBD OIL, I hope it works for her.

Good Luck. Gjkas.

Yes, seems like its trial and error. So good to know others experience. Will see my mum tomorrow, can give bit more info and encouragement.

Hi Gjikas - did the CBD oil help you at all? If so, what brand/strength did you use?

My husband tried this and it made no difference at all. I wouldn't touch the stuff under any circumstaces. But especially not while on DMARDS. But we are all different and some may disagree with me.

With luck, you'll find the prednisolone works pretty much immediately. They put you on that to tide you over until the MTX starts working. I wouldn't mix it with anything else without the consultant's approval.

I don't see why CBD oil could not be supplemented while she is on the methotrexate. I take 20 mg of Methotrexate per week and when I feel achy, I take a few drops on my tongue. I believe it helps. Check with her doctor of course.
