Sulphazaine and anaemia

Hi

In new to the group....

Has anyone developed anaemia resulting from taking Sulphasazine ?

This was my first treatment

I was just starting week 6 of taking this drug when my hb went down to 72. My platelets and other blood work was degranged.

I had to have a blood transfusion

My consultant was adamant it was not the drug causing this, so was a few days before I stopped it.

Not taken it since, my bloods are still not right but improving

Thank you

There will be lots here who have more experience than me so until they reply I will tell you my experience. I've been taking sulfasalazine for about 10 months (along with methotrexate and prednisone) and have had no such trouble as that. Of course my diet is very nutrient dense so I can have the best health possible with these drugs. Also, I have to take some supplements.

Quitting the drugs is not an option for me as the pain I was in was insupportable and getting rid of it my first priority. Hope this is helpful.

I am on Sulphasalazine for my RA and I have been anaemic for months. Rheumatoid Arthritis is at the root of anaemia I think rather than the medicine. I’ve tried to eat more iron rich food - green veg, tofu, chicken and I have Guinness about 4 times a week and take FLORADIX, a herbal iron tonic which you can get at Boots. Check with a pharmacist that you can take it though . It really helps me.

Thank you for your reply, I was told to stop the sulphazazine and I am awaiting an appointment to start something else.

My anaemia was really bad and bloods kept dropping I had to have a blood transfusion and take time off work.

Poor you. You must’ve felt awful. Did the consultant say the Sulphasalazine contributed to your anaemia?

At first the consultant said it was not the sulphazine but gp and haematologist told me to stop and bloods have improved since then

My next appointment is with specialist nurse not the consultant, so we shall see what they say

That’s interesting. Maybe that’s why I’ve been consistently anaemic since I’ve been on them
