Sjorgrens stinging eyes

Hi everyone, after 5 visits since May to opthamologist at hospital, they have now managed to clear my eyes of “debris” and up to Sunday they were starting to feel much better, but now I am getting a stinging burning sensation. It feels like when you have been awake a long long time with no sleep. Anyone else experienced this. ?

Have you tried massaging your eyes with a warm face cloth? I find this helps when my eyes are particularly bad . Hope you find something that helps 🌸

Yes, if I don't use my eye drops frequently enough I can't open my eyes at all.

I’m awaiting test for Sjögren’s . I too get this burning . As said a warm damp flannel helps eases the initial burning. I then use eye drops . A friend suggested putting Vaseline on my eye lashes after drops for me this has made a big difference. I use Vaseline every day and night and I don’t need to use a flannel or drops as much . It works for me .

Hi like J1707 I find using white soft paraffin excellent. I used to have terrible problems but more or less none now. I rub it in circular movements with eyes slightly open along top and bottom last areas. Hope you find this helps too 🙂

Hi, I have recently had 3 eye injections to get clear sight following a film removal. Due for final inspection next week, hopefully they will sign me off. I've found that just resting the eye + the warm flannel treatment has been useful. Trouble is I go clean off to sleep which has the wife complaining I'm not listening.

Keep well, hope the treatment for you has been helpful.

I know this is entirely different as to reason for sore eyes but my mum in law has coeliacs disease and suffered terribly with burning dry eyes to the point that she never had a face cloth away from her face. I suggested that she try having some COD liver oil or krill oil daily as ‘dr google’ had suggested that it may help and to my surprise and her relief it did after only one week. It’s not often that suggestions found on the internet work but it really has made a difference so perhaps try it ?!?

When you use eye drops you need to keep using them, almost ‘overdosing’. Some people think once in the morning and once at night is enough - it isn’t, you need to carry them with you and put them in regularly throughout the day. Celuvisc and Theolose Duo are good.

I’ve just changed onto one my rheumy recommended Sno Tears - he has recommended it for two years running and I’ve not been able to find anyone on the high street who stocks it so this year I went online and bought it. It is very cheap compared to the other good preservative free drops and I had no hopes of it working but I couldn’t face seeing him again for a third time never having given them a try. Surprise, surprise, they have been really good - so far. I don’t even think they are preservative free and they are definitely ‘old fashioned’ compared to the modern drops like a Theolose and HycoSan etc. I’m also using stuff called VitA POS which is thick like Vaseline and I put it in before I go to sleep.

You can buy a microwave heat bag to put over your eyes, that is good too but I think I prefer the hot flannel and a spot of massage. I’ve found Blephawipes to be good too but the thing that helps most is just to keep stuffing the eye drops in. My problem is that my eyes start to feel better and I use less of the eyedrops and they are only feeling better because I am using the eyedrops. So don’t stop them altogether when your eyes feel good.

Hi there , yes I also use vita pos, and heat pad, also using eye drops every 2 hours or so, sometimes every hour. Cleaning eyes also 3 times a day. My R A now under control with Ritixamub, but this “ eye condition”is really getting me down. May ask gp for steroid drops as last resort.

Gosh you might need to, sounds like you are doing all the right things. Could your doc refer you to an eye specialist? An expert in that field might be your best bet.
