Physio really helped my neck, I now do a range of neck exercises regularly and use a heat pad as soon as I feel any stiffness / pain coming on.

A good pillow too, I bought a neck pillow to sleep with, available from ikea or online. But you could try rolling up a hand towel and inserting it into your pillow case with your pillow to see if it helps first.

I also take daily NSAIDs, voltarol works for me.

I have herniated discs in my neck, some osteo-arthritic changes and the RA has started to erode the first vertebrae...

As Mmrr says, daily exercises and careful sleeping position are the most effective things.

A good pillow is vital......if you see a physio ask for a recommendation for the type of pillow you should look for.

If you aren’t seeing a physio and your GP won’t refer you ....you can self refer.

You can pick up the form Online ..... I seem to remember it has the instructions on how to find out where to send it in your area .

I had a great physio for this issue, worked a treat. It was via the NHS and the service was better than the private ones I’d paid for.

Also gave me stretches and exercises to do which keep the pain away

Exercises with a resistance band given to me by RD Physio have helped strengthen my cervical spondylosis (OA). Prescribed meds amitriptyline x 3 day & general regular pain relief co-codamol & NSAID etoricoxib also help. As does a firm feather pillow, which maybe sounds odd but I can't get on with 'solid' pillows so Physio suggested something I could mould round my neck & the warmth of the feathers helps ease daily strain.

The main thing I would recommend is you ask to see a Physio, preferably one connected to Rheumatology, who can personalise strengthening exercises for you.

Hope this helps.

This post was very useful to me as seeing physio on Monday, got pain up left side of neck into my head don't know if this is arthritis or related to my torn rotator cuff which I damaged when I fell last year. I'll have to see what she says and if she can help me as popping pain meds regularly. Hope you get some help for your problem take care xx
