RA my life long companion

I have never posted before but have read extensively. I have had RA since I was 21 and I am now 74. I also have been on MTX for a long time, since 1992. I am awaiting a CT for scaring on my lungs. Has anyone else had this happen to them.

Hello and welcome.

I know that methotrexate can affect lungs. Maybe you started with a dry cough or/and shortness of breath for them to suggest a scan. I hope they can soon sort this for you.

Methotrexate caused pneumonitis with me and I had to come off it permanently. Long term steroids were needed. I don't think scaring is quite the same. Pneumonitis is inflammation of the lining of the lungs. I wish you well for the scan.

Following a CT scan, I was told I have scarring on my lungs 3 years ago. I'm not sure they are certain exactly what causes it, but my chest consultant reckons it was my RA and not methotrexate, and I did develop a nasty persistent cough during a prolonged RA flare from hell not long before being diagnosed. So that seems to fit in with what my consultant thinks.

Hello Anonymousgal welcome to our site. I’m new to it too but it’s a great place to offload, ask questions or just scroll through and see what’s happening

Hope your scan goes ok

RA can affect the lungs, as can the treatment for it. Hope that the scan doesn't show too much damage and you can continue your activities as you want.

I too was checked for this, fortunately I didn’t have any scarring. My Rheumatologist told me this was associated with RA not drug use, wishing you well, good luck.

Hi, you’ve done amazingly just to live all this time whilst coping with RA.

Welcome to the community. Wishing you well for scan outcome. :-)

I have Bronchiectasis with my RA. Strange thing is that I had to stop using MTX for a few months while I had Chemo (Breast Cancer) and my lungs improved. Since I started MTX agai my cough has come back. But I had scarring before I started on MTX and before my Bronch diagnosis.
