Best NSAID for irritable stomach?

NSAIDs help so much with my joint pain, but they’ve given me ulcers in the past. Any recommendations on what might be gentler on my poor gut? Thanks!

Have you tried the gels or sprays. Depending how strong your reaction is to NSAIDs, you may be able to tolerate them this way. I, personally, couldn't as even a short sharp spray on my ankle sent me reeling with indigestion and heartburn.

I’ve tried cream with aspirin and lidocaine, didn’t seem to do much for my osteoarthritis. I just read about magnesium spray in another thread and am going to give it a try!

I take pantoprazole 20 mgs twice a day along with my voltarol. I find it to be much better than either omeprazole or lansoprazole in controlling gastric reflux and indigestion. Some GPs are reluctant to prescribe it due to cost, but if you have had problems in the past they might consider it.

I was put on an alternative due to an allergic reaction it is on prescription. It was prescribed by an immunologist. I didn’t realise there was an alternative and my GP had never heard of it. I don’t know where you could start in finding an alternative worth asking a Rheummy nurse or rheumatologist.

What is it called? I see my immunologist in June and will ask about it.

I remember my GP telling me that naproxen was supposed to be kinder on heart and stomach than other NSAIDs. Best of a bad bunch I suppose.

I was prescribed nabumetone, trade name reliflex as this was supposed to be kinder for my stomach. I also take lansoproxole daily.

As well as the excellent suggestions already made, trying an enteric coated tablet may help. It’s supposed to stop the drug dissolving in the stomach, instead making it digestible in the small intestine. I take 20mg omeprazole with 500mg enteric coated naproxen a day. The tablets are also smoother and easier to swallow, a bit more expensive but in your case could be tried. And yes, diclofenic and prior to that Celebrex, worked better for me but I was told naproxen was kinder for the heart.
