Have been off meds for 6 months due to an accident....

Hi Everyone

Just wanted to share this experience...It might be helpful ...

6 months ago I had a bad accident with a horse. I was holding him by the reins and standing next to him... A very large horse...and he shied when he saw a dog. Somehow his rump came around and I was on the ground.,,next his back hoof came down onto my right ankle. It was So painful I didn't have the energy to scream...,just whimper!

I had a compound fracture and my foot was at a very strange angle.

I had plates and pins and was told there was a chance I could lose the foot.

Well to speed up recovery I was taken off methotrexate. I wondered how I would manage without it. For 4 months I was fine but then my knees started collapsing or locking up, I was clumsy again and I was in a lot of pain from RA.

I really did hope that I could stay off methotrexate permanently but now I know how much it was keeping me well.

Thankfully I still have my foot and I am walking but knees are the problem.

The wound is almost healed so I can go back on methotrexate.

Before I had the accident I was toying with the idea of going off methotrexate ....but now I am certain that it was very necessary med for me to be on. I have had RA since 1993.

Thank you for sharing your story, I am so glad you didn’t loose your foot and hope the rest of your recovery is speedy! I think we all at some point think of trying to come off MXT and it is good to know your experience although I wish it could have had a different ending for you, but it is great to know that MXT really works for you. Take care!

Yes it's interesting that many of us are tempted to come off meds. Thanks for your encouragement Zip. Onwards and upwards!

Thank you. I know it can only get better from here.

That’s a really unfortunate accident and it sounds horribly painful :( I really like how you’ve found a positive in how MTX is actually working for you. It’s also great that you’ve still got your foot. Do you ride? And if so, will you be able to go back to it? All the best, cheers Deb:)

Hi Rosie. I’m really pleased that you are now recovering from your accident. I am also on methotrexate plus lots of other meds and am so fed up with taking all these drugs that I have seriously thought of coming off them. Reading how you struggled has made me rethink my earlier decision and have decided to wait and discuss it further with my consultant. I really hope your recovery continues. Good luck

Thank you Pauline. I am having such a good day today and managed to get a lot of little chores done. Stopped a little while ago as my knees had had enough. How I miss my knees. Thanks for your encouragement and I hope you have good days as well.

Thank you for sharing. I have RA AND OA and am taking Leflunimide. Because I had my leg amputated in December I have not been able to take my med. I have a skin graft on the same leg and it is still slowly healing. Lately I have been in so much pain when I get up its hard to use the walker when I go to the bathroom in the morning (wheelchair doesnt fit in bathroom). Any way I have to be careful using prosthetic that it doesnt irritate it. I started taking my leflunomide 4 days ago and am hoping it doesnt slow down the healing process of my graft

Oh I feel for you. Recovery is so slow and so much patience has to be mustered up. Some days I would think....I have to climb this mountain again today....My biggest problem was my numb or sore backside! I could not believe how long the wound took to heal. I look at the scars now and yes I can see why they thought my foot was at risk...the scar goes half way around my ankle...My foot was hanging. I was so blessed to have my son as my carer. He changed dressings, cooked, washed my clothes, took me to my many appointments.

Today I went shopping thru the mall and used a trolley for balance and made myself walk and walk. Feeling grateful even though it was slightly painful.

All the best for your recovery....I know it's a hard journey. Wishing you lots of better days.
