Foot fusion: Hi everyone I'm due to have a mid foot... - NRAS
Foot fusion
I have had triple foot fusions on both feet. I would imagine very similar recovery. The first 13 years ago second 11 years. Both done at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital. In hospital for 3 days, for the first as had a general, 2 days for the second, as they agreed I could have a foot and leg block plus sedation. In plaster of Paris for 10 days, then a fibre glass cast for 3 months non weigh bearing. Changed to a weight baring plaster for a month, then into a boot for 6 weeks. Takes about 6 months up to a year to recover. Hope this helps, I assume you have had the procedure explained to you. All the very best. X
Thankyou
How r you now did it work any problems
I didn't have a choice as my feet had twisted and would have been walking on my ankles if had left it. I have erosive RD so had a few changes, one of the screws worked loose and had to be removed about 18 months after on the first one. I had flat feet anyway so with the fusion my feet are not very flexible, pain wise very little. The ankle collapsed about 5 years ago on my right foot, but as I can manage, have not had a further op as it would also involve another op to realign the foot again as well as an ankle fusion. Not sure I am typical as we are all different. Unfortunately my spine is my main problem now and the pain with severe canal stenosis which causes nerve pain in my legs. I do hope everything goes well for you. X
There's a useful booklet here (copy and paste!):

Just to say when I had a sub-talar fusion I found an orthopaedic leg trolley wonderful. So much easier than crutches and I could whizz around at speed (sometimes too fast for safety to be honest). I hired mine and it arrived in a couple of days. The hospital physio department denied all knowledge of them at the time despite having at least three that I knew about from other people!
