Hi all, my search for an alternate treatment to my RA and ITP lead me to this publication. I am so happy that the paper concludes that RA related inflammation and bone degeneration can be controlled. More importantly, it also says that Platelet count also improves.
Can't wait to get hold of some tamarind seeds and start experimenting.
Will post my results after I use it at least for a month.

Interesting preliminary work on rats. I would wait until there is a bit more research! We have no idea from this study what effect it will have on humans and what the disadvantages might be. There doesn't seem to be a follow up study since it was published.
True, not much research. However, we in India have used, and are still using tamarind every day in our cuisine. Tamarind seeds are still consumed in our villages. The person who helps me at home is aware of the health benefits of tamarind seed ! But I , an urban dweller, am not. She says her family uses tamarind seed extract to combat gum problems. They make their own powder, at home. Also I am more interested in regulating my Platelet count as I have problems with all other medications or herbs. I don't have the time to wait till further research is conducted. I also don't think much research will be done, at least in my lifetime. So will keep you all posted on my progress or any lack, thereof ! 😊
Thank you Simba, very informative. Actually just last month my Platelet count plummeted to 12k, all because of Ranitidine, which was prescribed by a physician. After I stopped Ranitidine my Platelet count has now slowly risen to 50 k again. Ranitidine was the only new addition, so it was easy for me to identify what caused my Platelet count to fall. Even PPIs have this side effect, is what I found. So these studies on tamarind is a welcome break for people like me. Will definitely give updates.
I know lots of my friends who swear by this and believe it really helps them with arthritis I was not sure about RA so didn’t bother. Does anyone know if it effect tablets. As I have been told to alway check. How will you be taking it as I may start too.
Hi Parker16, I will be roasting the seeds and then making a powder by running it in the blender. Will make a tea with this powder, as boiling the seed extract makes it more digestible. Also, I take no medication except vitamins and calcium. All along I have tried to keep my RA inflammation under check only with Anti Inflammatory diet.
Will check out whether any studies have been done on how it interacts with drugs for RA.
Great I also take thyroxine for my Thyroid so if you do find anything I would love to know. I am always keen to get the correct dietary advice as I feel the hospital are good but not for the extra help only drugs . Unfortunately I had to have some steroids again for bad flare up the worst yet x
Looked into your history and see that you have been controlling your RA without RA meds already for a long time. Are you following your original diet, that looks very much like mine? How much excersize do you do? Your experience sounds very encouraging for many that want to try dietary measures with or wthout meds. Good luck. I hope you will keep us posted. Simba
Hi Simba,my exercise regimen first. Prior to getting ITP, 4 years back, I used to do Surya Namaskar, one complete cycle, of 12 steps, 6 times, every day.Not the so called Power stuff, where all the steps are done in the blink of an eye, but a slower one. However after ITP, I have had to stop it. I was too ill for a year. Then I tried to restart albeit slowly, a year back. I can still manage two cycles, of 12 steps. But only once a week. I take care not to overdo. As for other exercises, I do walk, a km , every day, if I can. Otherwise I skip the walk. If I increase my pace, or increase the distance,I find that I get bruises on my thighs. This could be because of my ITP. Unfortunately I have to regulate my exercise on my own, as no physician here can even fathom that I am able to manage 2 Auto Immune Disorders without allopathic medication. So I am on my own. And doing pretty well 😁.
Now to the diet part . I do follow my original diet.
I have to stick to an
Anti Gluten
Anti dairy, except for homemade yoghurt made without any added sugar( we call it curd here)
Anti sugar
Anti nut, except walnuts
Anti grain except rice in little quantity.
Of course lot of veggies, fruits. I have tried veering away, only to find that the occasional treat becomes an everyday affair, and I get a flare. So now I am wiser, 😅 because, I cannot bear the pains anymore.
Of course, my vitamin army, has been the backbone of my efforts at wellness. As far as RA is concerned, it behaves quite well. It's only the ITP that keeps throwing tantrums, like a naughty child 😖. Yet to come to grips with that one. 😃
Sounds like excersize has been an integral part of your treatment regime. Low impact is the key I think. My diet differs in the amount of carbs and I do not eat fermented foods and try to have milk daily for the calcium. Did you know that carbs feed thyroid production and that there is a connection between low thyroid and ITP? Here is some reading that may interest you.
Oh, didn't know that. Thank you Simba, will check it out. I had a good platelet count of 200 k, before the ITP VACCINE. I was tested because of menopause, and my gynecologist wanted to check that I was doing well in all parameters. It was a gradual one, and my gynecologist was amazed that my uterus was very healthy. Could menopause cause Thyroid problem? After Yellow Fever vaccine, I started feeling very tired, and, my Platelet was 20 k. Maybe, lack of Estrogen created imbalance in thyroid? Thanksagain. Will check that link.
Oh yes, menopaus can and often does cause thyroid problems. The reason for this is however is the change in estrogene/progesterone balance that is tipped in the favor of estrogene dominance that feeds inflammation and a dysfunction in the hormonal metabolism, including thyroid function. Supplementing with natural progesterone is both recommended and safe during and after menopaus.

Heimbach et al.[47] also reported that there were no change in blood biochemistry, urine analysis, liver function test, body weight in animals fed with T.indica seed polysaccharide for 28 d. In another study toxic effect is not reported, but increase in white blood cells and thrombocyte is observed[2]. T. indica seed contain tannin and the other compounds that make the digestion difficult so it is suggested that to consume it after boiling or waiting inside water[3]. And also in long term use because of its acidic content it can cause dental erosion[48]. Ibuprofen and acetylsalicylic acid when consumed with T. indica can increase their bioavailability and increase the blood levels of them[49, 50].

Hi all, after almost 3 months of taking tamarind extract, 10 seeds a day, (soaked overnight, taken raw the next day), I found my joints absolutely fine. However my platelet count started dropping, so had to stop taking it. Since I have not added anything else these 3 months, I am sure that tamarind seed does not agree with me, as far as platelet is concerned.
