I’ve been on Methotrexate 20 years and I’m (and a lot of other RA patients I’ve met) convinced that it has caused all of my teeth to rot and abscess over that time. I’ve had RA since 1996 and had my last 3 remaining teeth out yesterday, I’m 70 next month.
Problem is it’s conjecture as I don’t believe any medical studies have been done. It’s a Catch 22 as I wasn’t put on MTX straight away as is usually done now and as a result lost both my ankle joints, but MTX and biologicals seem to have stopped any further extreme joint damage BUT I’m a retired Mathematician and not a Medic so I could be completely wrong!
I have been on metotrexade for 15 years and I have gum deseise for 12 years. I asked for injections beause of stomack and reflux and hyatus hernia caused by it and I read today in the side efect of metotrexade: inflamations of lungs , unusual bleeding and mouth ulcers (serious side effects) . I had my dental cavitation last year in Oct and the gums did not impove. They don't say anything about gum desiese but I would assume it is to do because of the may people with MTX and gum deseise. I stop taking TX last year for 3 month in DEc/Jan/Feb and I was eating a lot of lentils (contain folic acid) and the bleeding stopped. But it came back again once o MTX. I can't take folic acid as I have side effects, so back to lentils, but they have to be cooked. canned ones don't seem to work. Good luck.Yes, I spend all my money on dentists. Last year was 6k just on the cavitation surgery and metal replacement without counting the cleaning every 3 months.
