Hello all, hope you are as well and happy as can be. My query is nausea, what do you do to cope with it? Have always had problems but now have upped my dose and even having folic acid for 3 days after, still stuggling. TIA x

You could try the coffee protocol. Has proven to help with Mtx side effects quite effectively, in fact.

Nausea is a problem for me too. I was always on 6 days of folic acid a week and was swapped from tabs to metoject which was wonderful. No nausea, no headache, no pain in the joints. Fantastic. I felt like me again. Two months later the nausea started to build again so I stopped drinking coffee and other caffeinated drinks and that helped. Ginger beer, ginger ale, ginger biscuits and preserved ginger all help me too. I hope this helps

Thank you. Yes I think I'll try ginger first. I don't get the nausea so bad every week. That's is why I haven't asked for the injection. Been having mtx for 5 years and now up from 6 to 8 tablets. Been on new dose for a while so plenty of time to settle in. Thank you for your quick reply x

Ask you Rheumy to prescribe the FA 6 days a week.....that usually sorts out nausea...plus of course drink plenty of water.

When Mtx settles down I found it worked very well .

I take folonic acid instead of folic. X rx. It seems better but I still struggle for a few days...I also have promethazine for nausea but it puts me to sleep.

Thanks. I'm going to try ginger first, water and all the basics and see how I go. Would love not to have any more tablets. Like I said it's not every Friday, just some. Never heard of your medication so thank you, v interesting x

Folonic is a manufactured folic acid derivative. Supposed to be less toxic.

It's an unfortunate side effect which those of us taking MTX can have, could ask if your folic acid could be increased by another 3 days. I'm on 20mg & take it every day except the day I inject. Which is another option if you're still on tablets, change to injections, it often helps ease side effects including nausea. Or, if these aren't feasible ask if you could be prescribed an antiemetic. I have nausea when my dose is increased & my GP prescribes prochlorperazine to take when it's persistent. Another option is your dose being reduced & another DMARD adding but this is for discussion with your Rheumy of course, worth trying the other options first.

I'm not so sure about coffee but would try ginger as Gnarli suggests, it's an age old remedy for any type of nausea & sickness, I've tried it myself. Folinic acid is used more in the UK to either increase effectiveness or reduce side effects of MTX when used in chemotherapy, rarely used for low dose MTX, though I believe it is used more commonly in the US.

I hope one or any of these help. It's obviously better if you can tolerate a med to keep with it but that means getting side effects under control. 😉

Thank you so much! You have some great ideas. I'm glad I asked now as I always feel im being a moaning minney as I'm not as bad as I could be. I'll be working on that next time I speak to my ra nurse. So easy to slip into "I'm fine" then walk out kicking myself. Thanks again for your pearls of wisdom x

You're welcome. There's no question too daft, if there's anything we can help with we will, usually from experience! The same applies to your Rheumy team. If they don't know then they can't help. I dare say we've each done the "I'm fine" thing at some time or another. Did you see the campaign NRAS did a couple of years ago? nras.org.uk/news/nras-colla...

Yes I saw it, could relate to it too and thought it was brilliant. I liked the ad with the younger man with his first day at a new job.

Will try the ideas on here for myself first. Then will call my nurse.x

Hi, I have just discovered "Queasy Drops" and they do help! They are a natural boiled type sweet that patients on chemotherapy suck for nausea. They can be purchased online, not cheap, but, hey, if its all natural and helps then its great news. Go and have a look xx
