I think I have seen others on here say that they feel nauseated after their injection of methotrexate. Boy today has been rough for me. It’s just weird how sometimes I can take the injection and never feel sick. Today is not one of those days. Yuck. I also have headache and feel very tired. Do any of you have those other symptoms the day after the injection? Sometime it will last a couple of days. I hope not this time as I have lots of things to do. Anyway y’all have a awesome week. Hugs to you all.
Nauseated again : I think I have seen others on here... - NRAS
Nauseated again
The headache might ease with drinking loads of water throughout the day - might be worth upping water intake the day before MTX day in the future to preempt this. I take oral MTX and no experience of injection form so my suggestions may not work in your situation!
I sometimes have fresh ginger with breakfast on MTX day which helps keep nausea at bay but I don’t get this any more as I’ve settled down to the med over the years.
I hope there are some useful answers for you
All the best

Yes yes yes !!! Methotrexate hangover... as you say some days worse than others ... never figured it out 🤷♀️🤷♀️
Right and do you get a little dizzy too?
Yes and I have to sit or lie down
Yep sounds about right. I get up in the mornings and I may end up walking a few steps right or left. Guess it’s just all part of it.

Yes, I do. I told the consultant about it and he said it was all in the mind as the injection bypasses the stomach!! Easy to say when you've never taken it!! Luckily, for me I dont get it every week (when I inject left side it's worse than right side. VERY strange I know!😂) but it is a concern as I'm about to increase my MTX dose up to maximum over the next few weeks so am worried about the nausea and possibly thinning hair. The only advice I can give is to drink lots of water and eat carbs on MTX day.
Ugh! I do wish clinicians would stop telling us how we feel!! I used to get this ‘ injection bypasses the stomach so you won’t feel sick’ rubbish! My sicky feelings arrive 12 hours after taking mtx and are not cured by having the injection....
Rant over! xx
I was worse on the injections Dobcross, 5 days out of 7 I was very nauseous and lethargic. I couldn’t function so went back to tablets and now take the highest dose I can tolerate, which isn’t much.
Still nauseated this morning and I injected Sunday night but usually by tomorrow it will subside. I am on the max dosage. Luckily I haven’t vomited just been nauseated. I guess it’s a small price to pay as I feel so much better. I also inject orencia. I also get a little dizzy at times for a couple of days. Do you have any issues with that? I do have thinning hair but my RA doc told me that the hair will come back that the meds don’t kill the hair follicles. Haha I’m the meantime I fight with covering up what I can. Hugs to you I hope you have a great day
Peggy
Hi yes I also have a couple of funny days as my family call it after injection. Must say not nearly as bad as oral medication I was constantly vomiting so that was not working. Generally I feel a lot better though so it’s weather you feel it’s worth the couple of days discomfort and I don’t have a problem with weight as I don’t eat much on those days my own 5-2 diet. Ginger works for me too I have ginger nut biscuits in cupboard always. I know this condition is a pain at times but I try to not let it rule my life not easy I know hopefully it will settle for you. Hugs
Hiya Peggy. I've been having more nausea recently & a Registrar at my last appointment reduced my dose from 20mg back to 17.5mg again, along with a change in antiemetic from prochlorperazine to metoclopramide. He was unable to explain why I’m having nausea given the MTX goes into the bloodstream bypassing the tum or why this should happen after I’ve been injecting so long. It's been a few weeks now & whilst it's helped ease the nausea the pain is increasing & my joints are noticeably more noticeable! I'm aware of all the tricks & tips, none have helped so I can't suggest anything other than those you've been given I’m afraid.
I'd certainly mention it at your next appointment, see if your Rheumy has any suggestions of help he can give you.
Goodness I was very nauseated yesterday too after my methotrexate (I'm on oral tablets). Last week I was perfectly fine, I don't understand why some weeks we are particularly bad. I just tried and kept my fluids up by drinking water and having food was a definite no no. I went to bed at 6pm once hubby came home from work and I still don't feel great today. Going to take my medication now and I think another lie down is in order. Hope you feel better soon.
There are two main mechanisms in the body which make people feel sick. One is a local effect on the stomach - the other is centrally based in the brain.
I would have thought that people with a scientific medical training would know that and stop telling people that they can't be feeling sick after an injection. It's not correct!
That also explains why most people have the nausea/vomiting not immediately afterwards but often several hours later as the effects on the brain from the circulation of the drug and its breakdown products circulate, and also why it varies depending what else is in your bloodstream.
