Hope fully there's a few PC wizz kids amongst us to answer the following....
I had a new chromebook PC for my birthday last tuesday. Yep, I know I'm spoilt, but deservedly so in my opinion. Anyway, everything is fine when I type emails & posts on other forums, etc, but for some reason the keyboard characters are all to pot when I try typing a post on this particular forum. ie...certain letters like b & i don't work, characters will suddenly change as does format, usually to italics. I've had a look in settings and everything is tuned into UK english, so no problem I can detect there.
I've had to revert to my old Windows 7 lap top to type this, and ye gods how slow it is compared to the new one! Any help solving this issue will be much appreciated as will any belated birthday greetings.

I'm typing this reply with the new PC so it seems to be ok now. Suppose I could have inadvertently pressed a certain key, or perhaps more likely, a combination of keys that caused the issue as the keyboard set-up is a little different from my old PC. Will take your advice if it happens again.
No sooner than I get used to Windows 7 then it's time to renew my PC. lol. I'm just not up for having to learn all the ropes again with Windows 10, so I bought one of these fairly recent Chromebook lap tops, which do all I need without having Windows installed.
I love your remark about being 67 but not feeling a day over 94. Since this thing decided to befriend me I feel like ive been catterpolted 10 years ahead, so... so find your comment very ammusing. Thank you for making me chuckle. Good luck with new computor. My son in law is going to help me purchase a new computor in the summer, so happy to take recommendations.
Glad you saw the funny side. Although it was meant to be humorous there's certainly more than an element of truth to it.
Good news regarding my new computer...I've just found out what was causing the problem, and as indicated in my reply to AgedCrone, it turned out that I was pressing the wrong key combination for locking capitals. So it's all systems go!...for now anyway. Tis a bit of a stupid method as I only had to press one key for Caps lock on my old PC.
I'm something of a troglodyte when it comes to all this PC stuff, so am sure you'll be better off taking advice on what to buy from your son in law. That said, if like me you require a machine just for surfing the net, visiting forums, posting emails etc, then one of these Chromebook lap tops might be worth investigating. If however, you do a lot of office type work and stuff then I think you'll be better off getting a machine that uses Windows 10 or similar. Anyway, just be sure to do a little research to make sure whatever you buy will suit your needs.
I recently sat next to a man on an aircraft who had an Amazon Fire HD10 tablet....he was extremely pleased with it.
It seemed to do everything my iPad does. It had a 10" screen & was incredible,y clear.....& the sound was good too.
I looked it up on Amazon & it sells for around £150.......considerably cheaper than any iPad.Only caveat is if your hands are a bit "iffy" it might be a bit fiddly, although you can get keyboards to attach to tablets.
Ask your son in law if he thinks it would be suitable. Personally I would never go back to a PC...but that is a subjective view....plus I know absolutely nothing technical about PC's or Tablets!!!
Total Luddite here I'm afraid. I've had a couple of weird hiccups on here recently. Being asked to sign in again and again, opening it and finding it wasn't me but someone else's posts on a different forum. Beats me. However, a very happy belated birthday, wishbone 🎂
Yes me too. For a couple of weeks (on an iPad) every time I opened HU a different screen appeared...often with posts years old. Sometimes I had to sign in...other times not.
At first I thought it was because I had been fiddling with my settings, but now it's fine ....maybe "they" have been doing some updating?
I've been having issues for quite a while. Unable to edit, getting someone else's posts on a different forum, old posts going back years. I did contact the powers that be but nil response. I can edit now though. Yay!
The Chromebook was a surprise present off my wife. When my more PC savvy daughter picked it up she asked the bloke at the shop for the simplest computer to operate that he had in store. Until now I thought you had to have Windows installed to do almost everything, including accessing the internet. The main reason I held off buying a new computer was because I'd have to learn how to operate Windows 10, which I've heard ain't that easiest to learn. The only niggle I have with this Acer Chromebook, is having to press two keys simultaniously for caps lock to work. My arthritic fingers occasionally hit the wrong key, hence the problem I talked of in my initial post. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it so it's no big deal.
I use an Apple iPad & still have problems, as I replied to Gnarli...some days I just walk away....life is too short to persevere with something we have zilch control over!
The problem was with me, not the keyboard, or to be more exact...my stiff fingers inadvertently pressing the wrong keys when changing caps lock. I just need to pause a second or two to make sure my gammy fingers are on target.
I do everything on my iphone. It's only a one finger typing but I remember the days of the old 'sit up & beg, plonk, plonk, plonk, ding', then pushing back the lever to bang the platen back. After that was the ? Telex ? Machine That one you used to type and then sit and wait for it to catch up with you. I'm a bit hazy with that one but you used to get reels of paper with dots on spewed out at you. Of course, the electric typewriter was fantastic & you could fit different 'golfballs' with different fonts. I remember moving to Sheffield and worked for a car dealership who bought me an electric typewriter with a whole line (!) of text which moved across when you typed. That also was quite slow but it would annoyingly stop you typing to print a line of text! Then came the first computer that 3 of us from the office had to drive over to Pendle for a training course and we brought the computer back with us. We had to be trained in 'Wordstar' to use it. It just had an endless string of control x,y,z,t etc and all it did was printed out action sheets for salespeople to call customers. If there was no action in one day, the names just appeared on the next day's sheet. I secretly think the sales lot had a competition to see who could het the longest printout & stretch it all the way across the showroom! It really is amazing though that something that can fit in the palm of your hand has so much more power & sophistication than all that old kit. I've forgotten completely why I started all this! I just blame the drugs. xx
