What side effects are you thinking of?
Tramadol might give you a bit of constipation so I would up your fibre intake and it can also make you a bit woozy and give you slight waves of nausea but that's combatted by the fact you are off to bed hopefully after a decent meal or at least not on a totally empty stomach.

Have you taken either of these meds before, to know how your body reacts to them? Tramadol made me sick as a dog, drowsy and feeling awful. Never again! Amitriptyline is excellent if you want to be knocked out and sleep, but can make you sleep for days, so only take smallest dose!
You'll sleep like a log.
hi, I have taken both of these. the amitriptyline, I found it better to take it around 7pm, it just stops you feeling as drowsy in the morning. x
Hiya Donnamarie. Although you ask about taking both I can't comment on tramadol as it's one pain relief I won't take. Amitrityline I've taken a few years though I started off on a lower dose (10mg) & built it up over months to find the most effective dose for my needs. I currently take 25mg with my morning meds & 50mg a couple of hours after my evening ones. I had to play about a bit with when I took my evening dose... I found if I took it too early I was asleep in the recliner by 10pm & too late & I had a hangover-type feeling on waking. So don't be quick to give up on it if you find you have similar problems, it's all about getting the timing right for you. I have proper restful, restorative sleep which helps enormously, nothing worse than struggling during the day because you're continually waking in pain during the night. The only side effect I have is a common once & that's dry mouth. My GP prescribed pastilles to begin with but I could get in with them so she prescribes Biotène gel which helps a lot but if I'm out & about I'll also have some gum to just help with saliva. I'm not one to carry a bottle of water around with me but I do have one in the car.
I hope they help you. Tramadol does have a bad rep, really only if you choose to come off it, it can be a struggle for some. Equally amitriptyline has to be tapered down but whether it's because it's not as frequently prescribed or the withdrawal side effects aren't as severe I don't know but you don't tend to hear of the issues you do with tramadol.
Nothing working so far still in pain and still not sleeping
