Arghhhh!

Been in complete agony all day! Got up this morning (4am), made large cup of black tea as always but unusually, on sitting down, I put it in arm of chair wherein it fell on me, badly scalding a large part of my arm and hip!

So painful!!

I have put burn gel on it and covered both burns with dressings but it still feels like my skins on fire!

Amy suggestions - please?

Cool (not ice cold) pack over the dressing? Making sure doesn't get the dressing wet. And a paracetamol....

As long as you're sure it's a scald and not a full skin thickness burn?

Thanks HH.

To be honest, I’m not at all sure.

When it happened, I couldn’t get up off the chair or remove clothes quickly enough- so I think that made it worse?

I couldn’t run all parts under water but put cold wet cloth on them fir over two hours.

It just doesn’t seem much calmer?

If you have access to Manuka honey it works miracles. I burnt myself canning beans several years ago and it left 2nd degree burns on my hands. It was a weekend, my doctor's office closed and if I would have gone to the ER it would have been astronomically expensive since our deductible used to be 10,000 dollars. I did some research online and immediately got Manuka honey and lavender oil. I saw my doctor a couple days later and she was very adamant that the honey would not help that I needed antibiotics. I continued to use the honey/lavender and in a few weeks the burn she said would take months to heal was gone and in another couple months 95% of the scarring disappeared. It is not a substitute for medical attention, but if you have a minor burn I would try it. It is used in hospitals now under the name medi-honey, so there is medical documentation this works. It is due to the fact it produces peroxide. Plus the honey keeps the wound moist.

I think you should seek medical attention. Any burn the size of your palm requires attention

Get it seen to quickly by someone who knows how to treat scalds.......infection can start very quickly in any type of burn if it is not treated correctly.

Hope it heals well.

You should go to casualty if its still painful -!that sounds like a large area to be self treating. If it blisters it will need special dressing - especially as itson areas you’ll need to wear clothes on over the burns. Ouch, do hope its better soon

Time to get professional advice I reckon. A scald that size needs looking at as soon as possible. If you can't see GP today it's off to your walk-in or A&E as soon as possible. Please

How are you doing now Marie? It's 13 hours later and I hope you aren't feeling any pain.

Eiram50 profile image
Eiram50 in reply to Cherub198889

Hi sue

It’s still feels hot and like it’s going to rip when I use it ( arm) but it’s on inside and outside of elbow so that’s maybe to be expected?

Took the dressing off hip as that’s definitely better this morning - and could comfortably get my trousers on with it in situ!

At the Docs this week fir bloods do if still bothering me, I’ll get them to have a look.

Thanks for asking.

Take care of yourself Marie. If the blister pops on it's own that's OK. Just keep an eye on it. If you see red "pen marks" traveling up your elbow, then go to a gp ASAP.

I'm doing very well now, way better than I was last year. 2017 was a struggle both mentally & physically for me. I think I found my "happy place" now.

Thanks.

I think NMH is right about getting your burns looked at by a doctor. On my side of the pond, doctors dress our burns & change them every other day if they are severe. Otherwise doctors want our burns to "air out" to prevent infection.

I hope your pain has subsided now and let's hope for fast healing.

Sending you a gentle hug

Thanks sue. I’ve taken the dressings off now to let some air at it- it does look a bit of a mess. I’ll see the doc tomorrow and let him have a look.

Please see your GP as soon as possible; I scalded my foot on New Year's Eve, and put on a brave face to my eight guests; I did not seek medical advice for eight days, and was shocked at the concerned reaction from my GP and two nurses; thankfully the burn had not become infected. I had been gently washing and cleaning the wound and covering with Vaseline (as info taken from internet) - WRONG - you should leave the area dry. It took until the end of February for the burns/blisters to heal, with twice weekly visits to the nurse for dressing changes! I am still getting pain from the scar tissue and have to ensure my foot is well moisturised twice daily. I expect it to take a further three months for the scarring to start to fade. Never again will I ignore what I thought was a slight burn!

Poor you.

Having experienced a third degree burnt foot ( and two weeks in hospital), I echo Gaynor’s response. In my case, I had no dressings but kept it exposed to the air, but it was over 20 years ago, so things might have changed , and air is. Ertainly more exposed. If you develop a temperature go straight to GP or Aand E. Drink lots of water, and not hot tea!!

Take care.

Only just seen this Marie, ouchy. Not to put too fine a point on it, seek medical advice, this is what you'd be telling any one of us in the same situation! You know how careful we've to be with infection & for the sake of being seen few days earlier than your prebooked doc's appointment it may make all the difference. If the blister is to be burst it should be done by a nurse with a sterilised pin & the appropriate sterile dressings applied. With one being on your hip that's at risk of friction from your clothing & possibly bursting, if this happens before you see someone cover the the area with the flap of skin, cover with non lint bandage & see the nurse at your GP Practice.

Thanks NMH and you’re right, it would be the advice I’d give.

I will call the surgery now and try to see someone.

Good to see you back here !

Hope all is as well as can be for you and your husband.

Lord! A consequence of foggy brain exacerbated by lack of sleep and the double whammy of a body that can no longer move fast enough 😥😥😥

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Eiram50

Not good. Is there nothing that gives you a good few hours? It's so much more difficult when not having proper sleep, as you know.

Eiram50 profile image
Eiram50 in reply to nomoreheels

Unfortunately , it’s been this way since I became ill. I can get to sleep no problem but only for maybe 40 mins and then I’m wide awake again. I do this through the night until 3.30-4am then I just get up and either work or potter around. It’s dismal !

I’ve tried sleeping tablets, sleep apps etc but nothing really helps. Now I’ve just resigned myself to the idea that this is how it’s going to be.

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Eiram50

Dismal is an accurate description, I feel for you. Now, I'm not advocating anyone should take anything for no reason but when I was having sleepless nights not being able to get in a comfortable position because of muscle & OA pain, up at all hours & all over the place with pain my GP started me on amitriptyline. A huge bonus was my sleeping improved, still does. This is from Arthritis Research UK

Chemical changes in the spinal cord and brain (central nervous system) can affect pain regulation and lead to increased pain and distress. Amitriptyline rebalances the chemicals in the central nervous system, which can relieve pain, relax the muscles and improve sleep.

Is it worth discussing with your GP? Thinking with recent events you're not safe to be left alone with yourself! Enough can be enough when you do things you wouldn't ordinarily do, things you do know aren't safe. I know it's another tablet but they can work well for many.

Eiram50 profile image
Eiram50 in reply to nomoreheels

Haha- you’re right, sometimes I’m probably not as safe as I might be! I have noticed I’m having more accidents of late.

However, I have tried amitriptyline unfortunately and it didn’t help me sleep and just left me feeling like I was hungover the next morning. I really didn’t like it at all.

To be fair, nothing much seems to work and I feel I’ve pretty much tried most things now.

However, I’m of the view that there are worse things in life and people so much worse off, for whatever reason, so I’ll just keep plodding along x

nomoreheels profile image
nomoreheels in reply to Eiram50

That's a shame. It did take me a few tries to get the timing of taking it right, too early & I was asleep in the recliner by 10pm, too late & it made me groggy (or more groggy) in the morning. It must feel awful that nothing seems to work, but you're right, it's something I say, there's always some worse off than yourself. I've been reminded of that this evening. We have some friends who we met whilst in Spain, they live here in the UK but down south though we keep in touch regularly. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer & been having chemo. They've informed him today that they need to remove his bowel but previous hernia op scars don't allow it. They've asked if he'd like to partake in a trial for a new drug which he's considering. On the one hand I'm pleased because another friends's sister had got to the end of the line for treatment of her cancer so they offered her a place on a trial med. They did say the likelihood was if it was successful she'd need to remain on it for the rest of her life. This was 20 odd years ago & she's seen her boys grow up & marry. On the other hand this friends tumour must be quite large as they can't offer keyhole surgery either. I keep thinking there's always hope, the med may just work as well as it did for Val.

Have you considered a sleep clinic? I know it sounds a last resort & will mean you'll need time off work but it may help, if it comes to a head & you become beyond tired. Enquiring if you'd be a suitable candidate wouldn't harm possibly? x

Eiram50 profile image
Eiram50 in reply to nomoreheels

I’m so sorry to hear that and I so hope the trial offers your friend the same hope and results that it did your other friend.

Hard times ahead - cancer is just such an unforgiving disease.

You’ll be worried about him but please do, remember to look after yourself within it.

A sleep clinic may be Worth a shot.

As always, thank you for your response and your guidance.
