Hi guys.

May be a silly question but here goes!

I have a few social events coming up and my wedding next month and whilst I dont normally drink alcohol it would be nice to participate in a few wee glasses of rosè..my question is, is this wise with the MTX? Any information ive read says to avoid alcohol.

Any advice welcome my friends 🍷

There's me thinking, we were all getting an invite to your wedding, lol.

When I discussed this with my rheumatologist, he said that small amounts of alcohol (while taking MTX) probably wouldn't do any harm, but to keep an eye on my liver function tests. If they became abnormal, then cut back on the alcohol because the liver wouldn't cope so well.

But remember, if you haven't had alcohol for a while, you won't have the tolerance to it that you might have had before - so a little will go a long way!

I was told the same by my Rheumy . Off for a few wines at Glastonbury.

Hi - congratulations on your wedding plans! To be honest, I drink a little as I did pre-mtx and the rest. If I have a big do (like my wedding last year) or go on holiday, I simply don't take my mtx that week. If it's a couple of weeks, I have asked for a course of prednisolone.

Thank you for that. I will chat with my Rheumy nurse when I next see her. Need a few wee vinos on wedding day and honeymoon 😃

Oh definitely ask rheumy about missing a week (or two). Weddings get a special exemption! Many congratulations!

It seems that these days the guidelines are more relaxed.... see recent article

But Oldtime speaks very good sense - more than one glass these days and I'm away with the fairies.

Probably good advice even without RA. I can't really remember much of my wedding. Apparently it was a good party.

I found last year on holiday I had a half glass of wine every night and as the week went o I became more and nauseas. So now I avoid it.

My son is getting married next month and I think I will miss a week from Mxt to allow me to have a small glass of champagne

Hi there. I was told that you definitely should not exceed the govt guidelines ( 14 units per week) and that the thing that is worst is binge drinking. So don't drink all 14 at once. 😂

Be warned, I used to have I pint every Saturday while I was on mtx. But the next day the pain and stiffness was alleviated. So make sure you have your painkillers at the ready. I don't want to scare you it wasn't that bad but there was always more pain the next day.

Hi Angie...

I was on Mtx for 7 years & I had a glass of wine most evenings. My Rheumy said it was fine as long as my bloods stayed good....but if you've had any problems with your liver....stick to fizzy Apple juice!

If I were you I'd try a small class of Rosé now & see how you go....don't wait for a special occasion & end up spoiling it because you turn out to be one of the unfortunate few who react badly to alcohol whilst on Mtx.

You don't want to leave your wedding reception in an ambulance do you?

I'm joking if course...but you know what I mean .....you don't want to mess up if you are well controlled on Mtx, for the sake of a couple of drinks!

I was told i can have up to 4 units of alcohol a week, not sure whether it depends on how much Methotrexate you take.

Hope you have a lovely day

Best wishes xx
