Has anyone tried a gluten free, dairy free diet for their R/A?
My chiropractor wants me to try it for my inflammation. I'm just uncertain about it.

I' m Celiac and whilst I do not say it does it is vital to be eating gluten to get tested for Celiac. So before stopping eating it get your GP to test you. Not made any difference to me. I'm in remission but down to taking LEF. If you want to go gluten free its your choice I'm just saying that if there is a suspicon of Celiac please get tested, I also had low Vit D and have Pernicous Aenemia all treated mean that my life is normal.
Use the search box top right for previous posts on diet, and similar words, and you'll find a lot about it. Some heated, some less so! Basically for some it works well and there are maybe 6 or so people on here who have found it helpful and post about it. For myself a good diet merely helps me tolerate the drugs with no side effects. So it's a choice, and an experiment.
But as Medway lady says if you have a suspicion you might be coeliac then get tested first.
I don't know if dairy or other foods trigger rheumatoid, but evening Primrose oil has fatty acids with proven anti-inflammatory effects. The dose is high and must be the correct balance. They are not cheap either. Ask you doctor. It is EPA and DHAs that do the good. They have a steroid-sparing effect ie corticosteroids can be reduced as a result.
HTH?
I like EPO for Sjogrens, and it does seem to be helping there.. There are some cautions there to be aware of though..
I developed an intolerance to certain foods round about the same time as I got PsA.
Wheat, onions, garlic are particularly problematic for me. More from a gut perspective, though generally makes me feel rubbish. Oddly, I also went right off meat!
I eat a fairly good diet, based on what my gut can tolerate!
I have had good results from cutting out oil, meat, gluten, dairy, coffee and processed foods. Helped me cut down my naproxen intake to nearly nothing this last 12 months. Also helped me lose excess weight. I am not anywhere near remission but pain free 90% of the time. Worth doing and good if you can find your trigger foods. Only way is to eliminate everything and add foods one by one after cleansing your body of toxins.
GlenB did you cut out ALL oils? What did you replace it with? I use olive and coconut and thinking of giving that a try. Do you eat eggs?
Hi, i am gluten free, oil free totally(I check all food ingredients and won't have any food that says oil), fully vegan, sugar free, coffee free, dairy free. I started with a cleanse and have added foods one by one slowly. I cannot tolerate bananas, blueberries and oats. I eat rice, potatoes, tomatoes, buckwheat, quinoa, all types of beans, onions, spices, loads of greens and orange juice. Lots of exercise too
Been following the AIP diet which has helped me, there are times when I have lapsed & I can feel the difference. The diet is gluten, dairy, & nightshade free. There are groups on FB with info & recipes if you are interested.
It has been working for me too. I have however dropped red meat. I have found coconut fat and olive oil and cod liver oil quite essential for energy and hormone metabolism. All vegetable oils are out.
A good healthy diet is very important for everyone. A few people claim diet helps them manage their RA.
I assume you live in the USA because only American chiropractors seem to pretend they have the cure or they know how to control most or all diseases. No Canadian chiropractor would dare claim they know how to control RA....come to think of it, I don't think I've read about chiropractors in the UK curing or controlling diseases like RA. One might ask, "Why only in America?"
My question to you is what makes your chiropractor an expert on autoimmune diseases? Your bus driver could give you the same advice on controlling RA as your chiropractor. It's best to follow the advice of your rheumatologist and GP. All the best to you.
Yes I am in the USA !!!
I don't feel she wants to cure my R/A . She has watched me over the years be filled with inflammation. I feel she believes my diet might be part of my problem .
As far as my Rheumatologist , he doesn't believe in any alternative treatments for R/ A. Being a nurse, I have doubts about it myself
That's why I posted the question.
Thanks for your reply
I just reread what I posted and I didn't mean to sound so harsh. It doesn't hurt to try diet. Gosh, I've been known to say "I'd eat used kitty litter if it helped my RA symptoms" lol
It seemed to help for my RA.
It's controlling my RA together with LDN and supplements. Have not yet needed any RA meds, never started them, diagnosed Dec.2015 with aggressive seronegative RA, positive CCP. Now inflammation markers near normal, no erosion in mri folowup. RA is different in all of us, for me it has worked and I thank my lucky star that I took the risk of trying nontoxic alternatives first. I was quite ready to try meds if my protocol hadn't worked.
Hi Simba1992
I asked my consultant about LDN I hate taking methotrexate been on it for 7 weeks now and steroids for 3 moths. I have now got high cholesterol and steroid induced diabetes . I hate all types of medicines but read LDN could work for RA and has less side effects and is lot less toxic than Methotrexate. My consultant has asked me to provide data and independent clinical trial evidence about LDN for RA but I do you know where I can get this from . How can I get LDN Prescibed? I so want to come off methotrexate and steroids. I cant believe my life has changed in 3 months from having to take no drugs to taking all these toxic meds. It totally freaks me out when I told my consultant I wanted to try alternative methods he advised me that if I went back to him inn6 months there would be nothing he could do so I started these drugs out of pure desperation and now need to get off them. Any information about LDN would be greatly appreciated what dose are you on how long have you taken it sorry but I am so desperate
Thank you

I went dairy and gluten free 2 years ago .i was desperate to try anything .
Have to say I felt better but not sure it did anything towards my joints .
Guess it makes you eat more healthy .
Lost weight but in the end it was the mess that sorted me out
Good luck

Hi Laneymacd - There are numerous proponents of different diets on here, including me. I eat a keto diet and have lost 15 pounds in about 4 months. Slow, but that is the way I gained a lot of it too (won't get into prednisone, etc. ha ha). That diet eliminates almost all carbs, which of course would eliminate gluten, but I still eat meat, eggs and dairy and lots of fat. So I guess I am saying to research your options and try eliminating one thing at a time to see the effect. Take a look at a rotation diet site and that will help you know how to do the elimination for best effect. My concern about just abruptly changing to any diet is that if your eliminate everything at once, and something works, what was it?
An example: My husband was told he was Celiac, and for 8 years we avoided everything gluten like the plague. We had AlCat tests done (allergy tests), and found out it was NOT the gluten, it was the dairy. I on the other hand was allergic to wheat and gluten both, so there you go - ha ha. Best luck with however you decide to go.
Yeah - my chiropractor is awesome too. And he does offer suggestions for the RA, partly because he is a big believer is alternative therapies, but also because his mother has RA too, so he has been up close and personal with it.
Take care!
