Hi Can anyone help please, I have a lot of pain and I am on Enbrel and Salazopyrin, this pain has come on about a month ago. I have been taking Enbrel for six years and Salazopyrin 15 years, I had my bloods taken and they are really good ESR 2, CRP 2.5. My question is why am I in so much pain? Can you help please?

Hi Audyk56,

sorry you are in so much pain. Sometimes the blood results do not reflect how a person's body is feeling. We hear this a lot on the helpline. Have you been over-exerting yourself recently? Stress can also be a cause of a flare such as you are experiencing. Hope you feel better soon.

Best wishes

Beverley (NRAS Helpline)

Thank you so much Beverley, yes I have been over-exerting myself, my niece has a wee boy of 15 months and he loves his great aunt Aud. Sometimes he can be a handful but I love him, will just have to be more careful.

Hello there,

I am so sorry you are in so much pain.

I was taking Embrel and Methotrexate, but I found the Embrel was not helping anymore. I had been taking it for six and a half years.

It took me nearly a year to come to the decision that a change was needed, during which time my RA was getting worse. Apparently it is not uncommon for this to happen when on Biological treatment. My Rheumatologist changed me to another one, but had to evidence his decision to make this change using an ultra sound scan on my hands. Needless to say both hands lit up on screen with classic RA symptoms of inflammation.

Phone your Rheumatology nurse specialist if you have one and explain your situation and hopefully you will be seen sooner than later. Alternatively ask your G.P to get in touch. With a change in meds., you will be much improved if my experience is anything to go by.

Don't neglect yourself. Make sure you are taking regular pain relief.

Hoping you are feeling well again soon.

Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and a healthy New Year. x

I often find now that my blood results are indicating a good level of control, but my joints are puffy, slightly red and painful. Not a good match between the tests and what my body is saying. Not that I'm having massive pain - just that it's enough that my usual pain relief isn't enabling me to sleep - I use the rating scale 0-10, and it's about 5-6 currently.

I just keep a record, when I remember, in my diary and on the app I have, so that I can let the rheumy team know. I have Zapain (30mg codeine + 500mg paracetamol) and meloxicam, which help at night when I can't use distraction and other techniques to counter the pain.

It sounds as if you need some help about how to manage your pain?
