Well, the way it goes is your daughter may get good looks and brains and her personality from you .... because those are the kind of things we celebrate and can also guess might be passed on when we have a child. But an autoimmune disease is absolutely not something you can predict, especially if you didn't have it when you conceived your daughter. And autoimmune diseases are also pretty common. I have a feeling that the current thinking is that autoimmune diseases may run in families, but I'm not aware of any compelling research about this.

My guess is that your daughter's rheumatologist may have made a link with your condition and your daughter's thinking that it at least provides a bit of an explanation. We all want a bit of context, a bit of explanation when we get this kind of diagnosis. He or she probably meant well. However plenty of people get PsA or RA without a family history to link to. All these words ..... and all I really mean is It Is Not Your Fault!

So sorry your girl has this diagnosis. However PsA is so not the end of the world. She needs good treatment, a good doctor, a positive outlook .... and a mum who cares about her. Don't worry too much about any possible genetic factors 'cos they really are not anything you can control.

Totally agree with postle2.

I worry about my children, but then I think - hold on, I must have inherited the genes too! None of us get to choose our genetic makeup (yet?!), and none of us would knowingly pass on even a cold to our children.

For what it's worth my dad has some autoimmune signs and symptoms, though not thankfully RA, and not for one millisecond would I blame him for my condition. Without him I wouldn't exist.

All the best.

Ade

I agree with Postle2 & Ade, but I understand your concern. I have RA and benign MS, my husband has palindromic rhuematism. I fear our children will inherit an autoimmune disease too. All I can do is tell them the warning signs so it can be diagnosed sooner rather than later.

Just thinking .... from what you say it sounds as if your daughter's PsA has been caught early .... that can bode well for a good outcome. All the very best to both of you.

Hi Neverwell,

Sorry to hear about your daughter''s recent diagnosis of Psoriatic arthritis. Unfortunately no-one yet knows the exact cause of why someone gets RA or Psotriatic arthritis however the current general thought of most researchers is that a particular combination of genes makes some people more likely than others to develop an autoimmune condition. There is also some sort of trigger factor that then results in them developing it however this varies from person to person and some may never develop an autoimmune condition at all. There is lots of research going on at the moment into it so hopefully we will know more in the near future.

There is a lot of information for your daughter on ARUK's website - arthritisresearchuk.org/art... There is also a fairly new HealthUnlocked community for those with the condition which you might also find helpful to follow - healthunlocked.com/beyond-p...

I do hope your daughter gets started on treatment soon.

Best wishes
