I have fairly strong feelings about the fairly casual use of serious antidepressant medications, so I would really question why you are being given a fairly heavy duty antidepressant for menopausal symptoms, especially when you are already on an antidepressant medication. Is there a reason you can't have some kind of hormone replacement therapy to actually address the hormonal imbalance that is the cause of the problem? If its your GP that has prescribed this, then maybe you could ask if you can be referred to a gynaecologist to discuss other solutions. It would be a pity to have to come off the amitryp if its actually working for you, and its definitely not a good idea to take two antidepressants at the same time (unless you are under the care of a psychiatrist and there is an extremely good reason for it).
I'm always extremely nervous about the idea of prescribing SSRI and SNRI antidepressants when it isn't for a defined mental illness, as I don't think most doctors realise how incredibly difficult it is to eventually come off the things - the withdrawal effects can be extremely nasty in some people (mentally and physically).
Doubling up with different antidepressants can cause problems. There are options other than low dose amitriptyline that are used for burning/nerve pain - drugs that are not anti-depressants and so wouldn't cause this particular conflict. Perhaps your GP would consider one of them? (Gabapentin, pregabalin, low dose carbemazepine for example.) It might be worth having another conversation with the GP if you feel that the 10mg of ami isn't controlling the problem in your feet.
Do you know what is causing the burning pain in your feet yet? I have burning in hands, mouth and feet that wake me up in the early hours and this getting steadily worse again just now as I taper off steroids.
If the burning in your feet is part of your RA then surely it would be better to try to get your RA better controlled?
I took Amiptriptyline for three years but it gave me heart palpitations so I had to stop. I've tried Duloxetine and Gaberpentin but too many adverse side effects and so hard to get off again.
A new GP wanted to try me in Mirtazapine to help me sleep better but I rejected this as I tried that once too briefly and it made me famished and groggy. I'm not depressed so no antidepressants for me. However I'm in pain and had my menopause early so if they want to help me to tackle my symptoms then i will only try more drugs if they can explain what is causing the symptoms to begin with.
If they think it's hormones or depression then they must prove it to me because otherwise I will continue to believe that it's part of the inflammatory/ systemic process occurring in my connective tissue.
So now I'm trying to learn to live with the burning pain in my hands, feet and mouth because it seems the better option than trying to mask it with powerful antidepressant drugs which all give me severe side effects. The only concession I make is to take a zopiclone 7.5mg once or twice a week to get a good night's sleep.
I agree with you the burning is bad the dr said it all linked nothing they can do but try medication stuff but to be honest nothing works for me at the moment i think they just throw stuff at you to shut you up I'm not taking them tablets as you say I'm not depressed so just have to use coping
