Life insurance...!

Morning all, I am in the processes of buying a house! My very first one with my partner and we are both so excited. Now it's come down to nitty gritty, and I need life insurance before we can go through with the mortgage. I am nervous it is going to be super expensive beacause I've got RA.

Does anybody have life insurance that doesn't cost the earth? What are things to go for and things to avoid? Or do I just apply for everything, critical illness as well?

I have RA, hypothyroidism and Raynaud's and I'm 26yrs old, and I don't smoke and I'm not overweight.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. It really is a minefield!

Xx

Exciting times buying your first house :-) It brings back a lot of happy memories for me as I think back to when I bought my first with my husband 29yrs ago! Have you looked on the Martin Lewis Moneysavingexpert site. I usually check out their guides before buying insurance. I got my insurance before getting RA but I did have hypothyroid, asthma and was rather otherweight. I think they hiked my policy fee by 50p. Just make sure you disclose everything as these insurance companies are slippery devils who will find any excuse not to pay up. Its difficult to advise anyone else on what to take out because everyones circumstances are different. We could never afford critical illness and thankfully never needed it. Just do a bit of reading up and remember if you use a broker they usually want to sell you as much as possible to earn the most commission. Best of luck x

Hi EmLem89,

If you email us at helpline@nras.org.uk we can send you a list of insurers that have been used by members in the past and they have passed on the names to us.

I am in NZ but I had experience of confessing my R.A. and getting accepted and taking

the insurance, only to find they decided to 'load' my policy for the first year or two

which substantially increased premiums for that time.

Maybe just something to check on though given the 'Society' has given you

Insurance names you will probably be okay. Good Luck.

Hi - this probably is irrelevant as so long ago (1973!!) but I felt as you do when I went for the independant medical requested by life insurance company (don't remember which!). Doc gave me thorough examination, then said "well, if it's for life insurance, no one ever died of RA" and I had no problem . . . .

Good luck - hope all goes well for you

Thanks everyone for your helpful comments :-) I've decided to go with Legal and General, they won't even consider me for critical illness but I took out their life insurance which is about £16 so it's not too bad :-) thanks again to all xxx
