LAWNMOWER

Need to buy a new lawnmower, anyone any ideas which are easier and lighter to use, hover mower or rotary, and easy to use handle trigger thing.

B&Q have a good range and they have them built up so you can see the lightest one, just an idea but I hope it helps.

I used to struggle with a flymo as I found it was very hard to push it around the lawn and my wrists would make sure i couldnt do anythimg else and infact dreaded doing it, so last year looked around and decided to give the Bosch Rotak range a look and since then I haven't looked back, and in fact find any excuse to cut the lawn as its so easy. I understand they have now also bought out an ergoflec handle design in some of their newer modules for even easier handling and they are so lightweight its really easy to handle. Honestly, give the range a look and good luck in your search.

Hello, I found that I was struggling with my hover mower and replaced it with a Bosch with wheels, having to manoeuvre the hover put a lot of strain on my wrist and shoulders. If my hands are sore I still sometimes struggle with the trigger. Homebase as well as B&Q have models made up so you can get an idea about weight and best placed triggers.

I have also reduced the amount of grass by extending patio areas and flower borders to make life easier. I also mow in an organised way to reduce going over the already cut areas and take my time having a rest half way to admire my handi work.

I am not sure why but I find hoovering puts more strain on my shoulder joints than mowing, one handed forward and backward motion I suppose.

Hubby swears by Bosch Rotak cordless mower. It comes with two rechargeable batteries which just about last long enough to do front and back lawns in one go, and we have fairly large garden. Hubby had major colon cancer surgery three yrs ago and found his old flymo heavy to handle. He loves the Bosch, says it's really easy on his tummy muscles. It's impossible for me to cut or strim lawns, my back pain is too severe. Hope this helps, Lynda xx

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I was initially thinking of hover mower as it looks so easy on the TV ads but now don't think that will be suitable as I also have painful wrist and fingers at times. Botch is a good make too so I will take a look at them. Love my garden couldn't be without one but I also have extended patio area. Think I will take a look at bedding plants too, love it, always perks me up. See consultant and rhemy nurse this afternoon for injections and possibly starting methotrexate alongside sulfasalazine so off I go to b and q and homebase for boost of happiness before I go to hospital. Enjoy your day. X

I found that methotrexate was a life changer for me. Combined with sulphasalazine it really kicked the inflammation into touch. I was fortunate in that I have had few side effects, so good luck with the new drugs and hope you are able to spend many happy years gardening.

About two years ago I had to give up on the idea of a lawn, just couldn't do it anymore....so I put down lovely multicoloured pebbles and kept a border around what used to be my lawn. I still have loads of colour that is lovely just no grass.Not nearly as nice as beautiful green grass but I really had no choice.....the dogs don't like it either! Living on my own it was just impossable to maintain a lawn and to be honest I don't miss having to cut the grass and now I can sit and enjoy all the colour from my potted plants......not everyone's choice I know but needs must in this case.

I know just how you feel. I couldn't cope with a hover mower so switched to a rotary one. As my old one broke last week I replaced it with a similar one Qualcast electric rotary mower- 32cm, £49.99 from Argos. It's perfect - light and easy to operate, empty etc. I've always had Qualcast mowers and never been disappointed. i eon't have a huge lawn but it's a fab, nifty little thing

Thankyou JEM95, I did look at that one in the catalogue, I too have always had Qualcast. Will have to make my mind up. Had some excellent advice from everyone.

Love the sound of that but don't have a large enough lawn and I think my sons would be fighting me for it if I did lol. They already know it will be their job if I can't manage to do it but will happily continue while I can. x

Go for one with 4 wheels electric one, it is easier to push compare to hover mover!

As to go the collection of cutting can make it heavy therefore frequent empting can help with the weight when pushing. Height adjusting is easy as well.

if you want to make it as easy as possible on yourself, you really need one with a power drive so it pretty much propels itself. The alternative (as they can be quite expensive) is to go for a really light weight electrichover mower. It does depend a bit on the size of the lawn you are mowing. I've given up lawnmowing and get a local lad to do it for me now, which is just about as cheap in the long run as buying a mower.
