Methotrexate & amoxcillin

Please check with a chemist or you GP before taking the new medication.
If you Google methotrexate + amoxicillin, you may find some answers on the interaction!

I have often used Amoxycillin with Methotrexate with no problems, but that's just me. I should check with your consultant, or your nurse specialist to check first.
My GP tailors which antibiotics she prescribes depending on what's ailing me. If amoxicillin or any of the penicillin group are considered the best option then I don't inject until the course is finished, as I've always been advised. This group of antibiotics can interfere with how MTX is flushed out, through the liver, & can have a toxic effect. If you're unsure it's best to ask the Pharmacist who dispensed it or your Rheumy team. Doctors aren't always aware of contraindications.
I hope the antibiotics work for you. The last time I needed them I had 3 weeks off MTX & had started to miss it.
If you have an infection you're not supposed to take methotrexate until you're better anyway
I recently had a uti and was prescribed amoxcillin which I took whilst on methotrexate. When I asked the pharmacists advice he just asked if I was aware of the mtx side affects and to stop taking immediately if any of these surfaced. Thankfully they didn't and all was well x
I was always told not to take mtx if i was on antibiotics.xxx
I have the instructions from the manufacturer and it says
that they can be taken together if the infection is not serious.
My thoughts are that bacteria is getting really smart. It's getting
harder to treat even simple things like strep throat, bladder infections
so even when it seems like its not serious, it might be if it needs to
get cultured because the current antibiotic isn't working or works and
then comes back 3 days later.
Everyone can jump onme and tell me to live in the here and now
or to roll the dice and take it. I would not take my next dose for
as long as on antibiotics and a few days more just so I was sure that
the infection was treated with the correct antibiotics.
Good luck
When I was on Antibiotics in March, my Rheumy told me not to take my MTX because I was already poorly with a lowered immune system. To re-start MTX after the antibiotics have finished.
Hi brit2013,
with direct medical questions like yours it is recommended that you speak to a HCP about it. Everyone is an individual and so what is recommended for one person may not be suitable for another. HCPs make judgements based on the individual's needs and medical history and so this forum isn't the right place to ask these direct medical questions. I hope you managed to get an answer from a HCP and are feeling better.
