Hi

I am pregnant and already on 5 mg of folic acid I would like to take pregnancy multivitamins which also contain folic acid I was recently on methotrexate

Hiya Simone. So do you have a rheumatoid disease, it's unclear? If so I would check with your Rheumy which supplements are safest for you to take. It's possible you could need more specific vitamins just now or avoid some of course!

Definitely best to check with your Rheumy in that case. I'm not sure though why you're still taking 5mg folic acid given that you've stopped taking MTX. As I understand it only 400mcg is recommended in pregnancy, far less than when on MTX. Maybe you'd better check with your Antenatal team about the dose as well?

As Heels says, it's always best to check with your rheumy. Especially if you're not on MTX now then is there another reason you need to take the folic acid? I say this as the amount we're given to combat the effects of MTX is loads more than recommended in pregnancy. I think it's 0.4mg a day rather than 5mg!

Definitely talk to your dr, but once I took 10 folic acid tabs instead of my 10 MTX tabs by accident & my doctor told me not to worry. Your body needs the increased FA, either due to the MTX you used to be taking or due to the baby growing inside, so I feel pretty confident you're not at risk of overdose. But do talk to your dr!

I would definitely check with rhuematoid and antenatal team . In pregnancy you only need folic avid for 12 weeks
