Sorry, but this is a bit off topic. I was wondering if taking Naproxen, co-codamol or paracetamol could cause your bloods to, show a problem with your liver.

Hiya Tichyj. In theory any of them could have an effect on the liver. Co-codamol is paracetamol with codeine & paracetamol can have an effect on the liver in some if taken in large doses or for prolonged periods of time. Naproxen can also elevate liver results, again particularly in long term use. I take max dose co-codamol & an NSAID on alternate days & my ALK phos are always on the higher side yet my ALT Is generally lowish but both meds are taken into consideration when reading my results.

Have yours increased recently & this is why your asking?

Thanks for your reply nomoreheels, I asked this question because my husband was prescribed these for a tear in his shoulder tendon, which he is having a op for soon, but his LFT has shown up a problem. Our GP has told him to stop drinking alcohol, but he rarely drinks. Just wondered if these meds could cause a liver problem.

Oh dear Jan, I'm sorry that must be painful. I think then he'd be wise to see his GP & ask if there's anything else he could prescribe to cover the pain but won't add to any hepatic problem. I've been there with being asked to not drink when my LFT rose (MTX) & get a sideways look when I say I never drink - it's so annoying when you genuinely don't!

hi I took that combination of drug and it made my bowels bleed after two week .its very scary taking drugs I am trying to manage on tramadol and pain killers but not doing too good I think I need to reassess ,hope you get sorted soon

Hello Tichyj, I have in the past had liver problems and the cause was co-codamol due to it including paracetamol. I came out in a strange rash under my skin and the doctor arranged for a blood test and it came back with the high reading. Once I stopped taking the medication my blood test levels came back down to normal. I can no longer take Co-codamol or paracetamol on it's own.

That is my experience, everyone reacts differently to side affects of many medications. Hope this will help you. Good luck with managing your pain, I am now on other medications and anti-tnf injections.

Hi, I have the same problem. Weird isn't it? My rheummy changed my diclofenic back to naproxem in case that was causing the rise in my liver. Will be seeing her again a week tomorrow to make sure my liver test hasn't risen so that she can start me on DMARDS. Mine has always been high though so could just be normal for me x

My ALT has been higher than it should recently. At first I was told to miss out a week's Methotrexate & the next blood test was okay. The latest blood test again shows raised ALT and this time my Rheumy nurse suggested I continue with Methotrexate for now, but stop taking Naproxen. So the upshot is that, in her view, Naproxen can cause liver enzymes to rise.

Hi, I took Naproxen for a short while (a month) having been told Dilofenac was not allowed to be prescribed from my GPs anymore. Naproxen gave me horrible heartburn and pain right into my jaw and ears and it also raised my ALT very quickly to over 70 when it had been perfect, so I was asked to come off it .. not take any anti-inflamm and then repeat the blood test a week later. My ALT then came back down to well within normality so I was told to stop Naproxen. Each of us react in different ways. Diclofenac never bothered my ALT but I know someone who had a similar reaction to the one I had on Naproxen. NK. x
